Say we are heads up both deep stacked and we are opp on a 3 bet pot and for education purposes we know he has aces and we've hit bottom pair on a dry board knowing we'll need to improve to two pair or trips to win. This is about 8-1 so let's say he offers us 3-1. If we call this we need to extract another 5 more bets off him just to break even but let's say the next street goes check check and you've hit your money card. Now do we still need to extract our 5 bets or has the situation now changed because the turn was checked free?

i'm not sure what your question is really. you're pointing out that we're making a bad call on the flop, but implied odds makes it worth a shot, that's fine. on the river, as we know we're ahead our aim is to extract the most value we can, so that's the line we take. whether that justifies our past actions isn't really relevant.

Needing 5 more bets assumes he won't let you see the river after you miss the turn. If you somehow knew he'd check the turn, you'd use your all-in equity to determine the odds you need, and a smaller amount would be needed. So to make the quoted complete: you either need 5 more bets or you need a free/cheap river and [some number less than 5] more bets.

Thanks heehaw, you answered my question. So because I gained the free card I didn't need 8-1, I needed about 4-1 so when he gave me 3-1 I just need to extract 1 more (and not 5) bet(s) at least on the river to justify my bad call on the flop.

But saying that we can't ever be exactly sure that we'll get the free card so it's still bad practise to make bad calls opp on the flop.
