Bankroll question Bankroll question

Hi Guys,

This is my first post on Two Plus Two and I'm looking forward to learning and being a part of this great community.

My question is regarding bankroll management.

A little background about me. Ive been playing poker for roughly 10 years recreationally. I would consider my self an intermediate level player who still could learn a lot.

I play mostly 1/3 and 2/5 live cash games (Depending on whats available. I live in an area where there isn't much options as far as game selection goes). Lately ive come across some extra money and would like to invest in poker and taking it more seriously. I'm playing with expendable income. So im not playing with my life savings, or to make rent etc.

I normally buy in for the max which is 100BB.

I have a bankroll of 40 max buy ins for 2/5. Is this considered enough? Or should I try and scrape together some more? I know i will inevitably hit down swings and variance etc. So I just want to be properly bankrolled to get an accurate idea of where i stand. And if im an overall winning player at my stakes.

I use an app on my phone to track all my sessions. And so far im up a few buy ins (I am well aware it could just be luck).

What sample size / how many hands would you say i need before i can make an assessment of if i have an edge on the game im playing?

Thanks in advance!

1. 40 buyins should be plenty. Many recommend 20 buy ins and that assumes no way to replenish. Note that if you are in games that play way deeper than max buyin (i.e. no cap of course and match stack games) you should still be fine but 20 may not be enough

2. You will likely never have enough hands, especially playing live, to 'know' if you have an edge because both you and the game you play will be changing. But at a min. to really know is a years long process.

Thanks for the reply. I will keep grinding and hopefully my results will speak for them selves after some time.

Yeah the game is uncapped. I normally but in for 200bb as there are some that buy in for 300-400bbs.

yah 40 buyins is good for most people. it all depends on if you are playing professionally or just for fun. also would u move down to 1/2 if u hit a prolonged downswing. but if you are consistently getting it in with pretty high equity it would be hard to lose 40 buyins imo.

here is a thread dedicated to winrates and bankroll mgmt

Most people r going to tell you that you need at least a 500 hr sample but would prefer a 1k hr sample to determine if you are a winner.

if you are a losing player it is called a gambling budget and you need infintity bankroll

a stone cold killer with an avg sd will need 20bi or so in live llsnl

Can you say specifically where your edge in these games comes from? After sitting at a table for 30 minutes or so have you formulated a game plan to attack players weaknesses/leaks based on the play you have watched? What is it exactly that you do that is better than your opponents? For what its worth I can talk for 30+ minutes on where my edge comes from and how exactly I am better than my opponents and exploit them

did you track your results for the last 10 years? what are they?
