So I am getting back into playing poker, found 17 bucks on the old poker stars account and have run it up to $100 playing .02/.05 NL on Stars. What bankroll do you think I need to play .05/.10 NL on Stars? To me the standard was 20 buy-ins, does that rule still hold? Also, doe the .05/.10 play a lot like the .02/.05? My girlfriend gives me grief about winning 37 cents at a time, I am hoping to move up to the 83 cent pots! Should I build my roll up to $200 before moving up? As you can tell I want to, but want to move in a disciplined fashion.

Thanks for any advice!

Yeah, I would wait until you have $200 before you moved up, just to give yourself more of a cushion to get used to the game and just in case variance rears its ugly head. As far as the play at the two levels, I started at 10nl, but I can't imagine that 5nl is very much different. The profitable strategies at both involve playing ABC poker and virtually never bluffing because the opponents are dumb and will call you down with anything (this is a good thing, unless you are bluffing).
Good luck!

If your crushing .02/.05 then take a shot at 10NL once you have $150. Just move back down if you drop to $100 again. You don't need a full 20 buy in bankroll to take a shot at 10NL (if you are beating .02/.05 for a decent win rate).

You are missing some important information. The number of hands it took for you to win $83 needs to be determined. Winning $83 in 50k hands is very much different than winning $83 in 20k hands. Without this information, you may be overstating or understating your bankroll requirements.

As 51outs pointed out, it may be possible to have 15 buy-ins (1500bb) since there is no pressing need to withdraw money and high win-rates are certainly attainable.

Thats a great point about the number of hands. I created a new PT database so my current results would not be clouded by outdated info. I only have 2,879 hands under my belt. The result is an insane +50BB/100 hands. I fully expect that win rate to decrease and I think I would be happy with anything over +10-15BB/ 100. I could really fold the next 2500 hands and still have that win rate :-) So I hope that puts my win rate into context... lucky lucky lucky.

Thanks!

I think playing the 2c and 5c tables on Stars you can easily hope to attain a 20BB/100 just playing ABC, TAG poker.
