This. 40/hrs week with no day job is friggin' hard enough but WITH a day a job.... are you crazy sir?

Again though - even if you play 25 days a month, you only need to make $40 a day. Not insanely hard to accomplish once you realize where the profit's coming from (game type, format etc).

And again part 2 - get good at poker in general not just NLHE - this should help a lot.

I don't think I can poker 40 hours a week without a day job. I find it really hard to sustain a the level of concentration necessary to play my A game for more than 2 hours. The fact that I only play when I feel like playing is huge on my win rate. I think of a lot of people who aren't grinders are just speculating over recent results, multiplying it by more hours to get a 40 hour week, theoretical monthly income, etc, without taking all external factors into account.

Of course, I don't know how hard it is, and I'm not saying everyone else will fail, but we can certainly do with some input from an experienced pro who's done this for a few years - what they've gone through to get to where they are, how their lifestyles are affected, etc. I doubt anyone will say it's an easy living though. I mean I'm sure everyone has the sense to know that any get rich quick scheme that sounds too good to be true probably is.

At the end of the day, no matter how much I hate it at times, it's recreation for me. I can play whenever I feel like it, or not play for a week if I choose to, and I can challenge myself to a new level when I can afford it. People play for different reasons, and I don't speak for everyone, but there are a lot of people who play for the same reason as I do.
Well good for you. But not everyone plays recreationally, some people need to win money and win it soon to make a living. i am not there yet but in a few months I will be. Please dont say stupid **** like if youre playing for money you wont win, just because you dont care if you win or not. Some of us do.

OP - My suggestion is to start out playing at 50nl (or less), play when you can, and don't worry about how much you'll make. You're in a decent situation. You have a full time job that allows you to pay the bills; a good bankroll; nice emergency fund.

I would only deposit $1500 or so and start from there. Add the rest of your BR to your emergency fund. If all you make is a couple hundred due to rakeback, so what? Keep playing. Don't worry about having a set number like $1k that you NEED to make. If you make 1k, great! If you make less, that's fine! You still have money from your day job to pay the bills and you've made some money you otherwise wouldn't.

My situation is kind of similar. My wife is having triplets and will be leaving work to become a stay at home mom. I've been playing poker part-time when I can to supplement my normal income. It definitely beats a minimum wage part-time job. Good luck!

this is easily do-able, the only problem being that a relatively small percentage of poker players have the discipline and mentality to be long-term winners. the good part is that you sound like someone who might (with what little info is in this thread).

She's going to stay at home for a while (of course that would change with a good opportunity but unlikely in our area). We have a son that could use the extra time with her as he's severely adhd and having issues with school. She just wants to make him a bigger priority and we figure now's the time.

I would recommend you to build a bankroll of 25k before you start thinking about cashing out 1k every month.

I should really stop comming to beginner's forum because people like wombat and bannum who have failed at poker are trying to spread their bs and discourage everyone else. Combat, you have almost 1000 posts and you still seek advice in the beginner forum? You must be the NL2 grinder sir, but I guess some people never graduate. And that's the last time I reply to any haters cuz life is too short to waste on losers like you.

Lmao, its easy to bash other people behind a computer screen isnt it? Get a life and gtfo.

Lot's of personal mudslinging lately, but the debate is academic. Everyone who *cares* about poker tries to win. When you win, you get money. Subjectively, you can define the *money* as your goal, or the *winning* as your goal... you can look in short term or long term perspecive, or you can try to see only the process, the goal of "near perfect play" as your real target... but objectively, it all points to the same thing.

Don't insist that others use the same definitions and same language if you're conceptually in agreement, and only semantically at odds.

I agree and it's just obvious that everyone plays to win money, which is what ive been trying to say to idiots like Combat, but he is beyond help.

Also, I want to encourage the guy because hes having a hard time financially, why do you have to bring him down? I bet hes better at poker then you.

You can do it OP!

This is without a doubt the absolute dumbest thread ever. The OP is either the dumbest guy on the plant or a lonely attention whore. Gee, i need money... i know, i'll play poker! something i could have done at anytime and chose not to! There is no way there is any truth in this post because someone this dumb wouldnt be able to operate a computer.

I thought post count indicated the number of posts a person has MADE. But right now, I'm starting to suspect you've only READ 8 posts to date.

Try to exaggerate a little less.

In several months from now you will probably look back and realize how wrong you are.

People "care" about winning money when they play poker, that's true. But that doesn't necesarely mean that it should be your main goal to make. What good players really strive for is to become better players everyday and make better decisions, money is just something that comes by itself once you become a great player.

What Combat is trying to emphasize here is that if your only purpose in poker is to make money, your results will be much worse than if you were more focused in learning and becoming better everyday because you are seeking success for the wrong reasons. A lot of people feel devastated when they don't reach their weekly/monthly/yearly goal and they forget about all the knowledge that they accumulated during that time, so instead of keeping striving towards improvement they just end up either giving up or going on life-tilt which hurts their game.

As for bringing OP down with our comments, we are not trying to do that, it's actually the other way around. We are telling him that from our point of view he might not be able to do this and save him the time and effort before he makes a mistake that he could regret.

If someone comes asking if they can go pro because they made 4k at the casino and blah blah blah, the most honest thing we could do is tell that person what the reality of going pro is about, we are not supposed to be like our moms and tell them that they can do whatever they want as long as they believe in themselves etc, etc.

Making money is good, but it certainly should not be your only motivation to achieve your goals, a person learns how to paint because they love their art, not because they want to earn 1k/weekly by selling paints, their love for art is what keeps them improving and money is just something that they earn by just becoming better.
