I ran into this hand in my most recent session. I am working on learning the right hands to play from position (yes, I am very green still with NLHE). I am unsure of how to figure pot odds, equity, and all those other concepts that are above my head atm.

I had watched the SB do this pre-flop min-raise before on quite a few hands, raising pot pre-flop when holding two unsuited broadways and better. SB was 65/17/2 with 100% VPIP from the small blind. Pre-flop I wasn't giving him credit for more than a single broadway with low kicker.
  • Should I have folded out pre-flop to the weak raise?
  • Would a move to raise the SB min-raise pre-flop been right in this situation to force him and others to dump weak hands?
  • After the flop, should I have made a call/raise (not sure how exactly to figure this given hand vs pot odds and his short stack - working on finding the info I need to calculate this)?
  • Should I dump the hand at the flop with the pot+1BB bet from the pre-flop aggressor and two others left to act still (only 2BB invested into a pot of 8BB pre-flop)?
Those are the questions that have been going through my head with this hand and I would love to get some answers for them.

No-Limit Hold'em, $0.02 BB (6 handed) - Converter Tool from FlopTurnRiver.com

Button ($1.32)
SB ($0.72)
Hero (BB) ($3.89)
UTG ($2.13)
MP ($5.15)
CO ($1.60)

Preflop: Hero is BB with A, Q
1 fold, MP calls $0.02, 1 fold, Button calls $0.02, SB bets $0.04, Hero calls $0.02, MP calls $0.02, Button calls $0.02

Flop: ($0.16) Q, 2, 9 (4 players)
SB bets $0.18, Hero ???

Total pot: $0.16

Thank you for any help you can offer to enlighten me on what I should have been paying attention to with this hand. Sorry if I am asking stupid questions or seem like I am missing the point... still trying to figure out the basics having recently learned enough about the game to realize that I know just about nothing.

never fold here, ever.

Even if you knew SB had Aces here, you are still getting the price to outflop him, then take his stack.

Normally, one would 3-bet here, his min raise is weak and reps a middle PP, or maybe Ace-Rag, hell, he can even turn up here with TJs sort of hands. Point is your waaayyyyy ahead of his range here, so raise it up for value, chances are you will take down the dead money.

On the flop, you have TPTK, get it in agaisnt a short stacker, who is betting most of his range here. He will call with lots of random junk like gutshots, bottom pair etc. As for the other 2 behind i dont see them having hands that beat you, maybe stuff like TJdd but mostly they are going to fold or call with worse.

Good job though on working on improving your play by analyzing hands, thats how you get better and make more money gj.

Thank you all for your replies. I appreciate the explanations of how I should have played and can see the wisdom in a re-raise pre-flop. I did end up folding to his bet on the flop and he took it down with the other two folding to his pot+1bb bet but had a bad feeling like I was missing an opportunity after I did it (which is why I wanted to get some input regarding my expected stupidity). I did a second shot at his chips a few hands later thankfully when pre-flop he raised, I re-raised, and he re-raised with a shove that I called. Fortune was kind enough to give me this second shot at him with a comfortable AA against his KJo.

I realize that I have a problem with playing scared as I have learned more about the game and realize how little I know. I need to work on building confidence in my knowledge of card strength and make my plays pre-flop second nature so I can avoid mistakes like the hand I posted. Hopefully once I get that confidence through more experience with the knowledge I have gained in proper tight NLHE hand selections, I can boost my ptbb/100 rate and build up to my $200 goal for jumping to .5/.10.
