Was wondering if you guys could help me.

There is a bank of progressive machines at a local casino and I was trying to find out a few % payback points. I tried wizard of odds calculator, but for some reason all my computers now block that application. Something about my system doesn't trust that app, although I think it is only running java? Anyway, what I'm wondering is when it is better for me to play this machine, instead of the 99.5% $1 machine that is also available.

The paytable, except for the progressive royal of course, is 97.3%, paying 25 for 4OAK and 8-5 on the full and flush.

My question is, at what point for the progressive does the % go above 99.54%, and 100%?

As a further question, anyone know what types of swings I should expect on this machine? How often can I expect to come out ahead if I play maybe 1200 hands or 2 hours or so, and how much would I need to play comfortably for that amount of time? I expect the variance to be significant and heavily weighted to hitting the royal.

Also, given the increased variance and chance of busto due to worse pay structure except for the royal, at what point would you say it is actually worth it to play that machine? Anything above 99.54? Or would you guys require a larger payoff for the royal to make up for the increased variance?

I saw it on Saturday night and the royal for a quarter was $2820. Surely this was well above 100% payback right? That's an 11200 royal. Of course I lost my ass playing it, but if you don't hit lots of big hands I'm sure that I will most of the time.

Thank you for any help, I did try to figure it out myself and I've always used that calculator in the past but my computer doesn't like it anymore

You can use the Wizard's breakdown of the equity of each payout on a 8/5 game, and just increase the Royal payout until the total % reaches your target (i.e. copy the table into Excel or something and modify the Royal Payout cell).

Use the "8/5" Jacks or Better" table

Took a few days last week and decided to go slum it at the Horseshoe in Bossier City, LA as the flights from DFW to Vegas were ridiculously high due to spring break I assume.

As per usual, their VP pay tables generally suck and none of the progressives were anywhere near being +EV. So I finally settled in on playing Ultimate X Poker - 9/6 Double Double Bonus. I was playing 5 lines at a time at the nickel level and playing 10 credits per hand. So a total of $2.50 per spin.

At least for me on this trip, I was able to put in a hundo and get few hours of entertainment while grinding Coors Lights. Had a few winners and a couple of lost buy-ins.

Then the VP Gods smiled on me. This was on the 3rd day and at this point I was down ~$300.00. Not bad since I was logging about 8 hrs a day playing.

Brag: Got dealt a Royal Flush
Beat: 3X multiplier on only 1 hand
Variance: Odds of being dealt a Royal roughly 1/650,000

Thank you. Hadn't thought of doing that. Appreciated.

Would you alter your strategy in any way when going after a royal progressive on a machine like this? Something like if you have

AK4x4x3x

you keep the AKss instead of small PP or anything like that?

Man, the last couple weeks have been really brutal, down 5k on the year, I ended up 24k in 2013...**** has just been brutal. Horrible weekend, haven't totally looked at the damage but I am pretty sure I am down 1.5k since Thursday, just came here to see some pics, thanks...oh, I did see somebody get a royal on a re-deal playing 2 dollar 9/6 DDB no progressive, pretty nuts! More pics of dingers please!! Good Luck!

Ahhhh Video Poker....

I play 9/6 Double/Double Bonus out here in AZ (best game in town, only 98%something)...

When I win (hit 4 Aces or hit a couple Quads) I feel like I could play for a living.

When I lose (and blow $400-$600 in a sess) I feel like a huge loser for playing and want to blow my head off.

But it definitely beats wasting a couple hours playing Limit Poker and winning or losing a couple hundy.

Nice hit!

Vegas flights also suck because of March Madness too. This sucks because my b-day falls during march madness half the time.

Ultimate X is really 9/6 DDB for nickels? Not 7/5? 8/5? 9/5? Maybe I need to up my drive from the 5.5 hours to Tunica to 9.5 hours. I hope you don't think 9/6 DDB w/Ultimate X for nickels (really, nickels?!?!!?) sucks...5-play only 0.21% worse than a machine that Louisiana would ban. Now any sane human being can only get about a 99.7% return longterm out of the game. But it looks like you did better than that this time.

Hammond also offers 9/6 DDB w/Ultimate X, but for only 3 play dollars.

I have never seen any full pay Ultimate X for nickels anywhere. Cheapest I've seen is quarters (South Point, for example).

As for myself, I went to Tunica for my birthday, ran like crap. Biggest example, hitting AAAA while playing ~99% Double Deuces Wild. Also felt crappy when a $20/$40 A-5/2-7 Triple Draw game was playing at the Shoe, but I knew I was too poor to play it.

I watch one hand of A-5 from 5 feet away while being able to see some of the button's cards.

x = low cards

Predraw:
Button raises to $40 with 76xx, SB raises to $60, BB calls, Button calls

Draw 1: SB draws 1, BB draws 3 (idiot), Button draws 1

SB bets $20, BB folds one round too late, Button raises to $40, SB calls

Draw 2: SB draws 1, Button pats (made 76xxx)

SB checks, Button bets $40, SB calls

Draw 3: Button flips over his hand!!!

After some commotion, SB draws 1, Button pats.

Check, Check.

!$@!!#$!@$!@@$@!$, I need a good job!!!

Also, Harrah's Tunica is closing June 2nd. So cheaper hotel will be harder to find there now.

was up several hundo (brag) last night at fallsview in niagara playing .25 DDB 7/5..had one 4 to a royal (missing king, story of my life...4th time thats happened) and then a few 4OAKs (queens, kings) that put me up nicely.

ended up donking it all off at a craps table. (beat)

huge snowstorm hit here for some stupid reason so we decided to stay an extra night (variance) vs driving home in the snow...we are on the US side now and apparently seneca has a dedicated VP bar where they comp drinks (they don't in ontario..puritans) so I'm looking forward to a few more hours of play this evening.

Ended up at a dice table again but finished up $350 this time.

Yeah, red/black straights are annoying, i've had a handful of them during my royalless streak of 18 months. But with that paytable, I'd be sticking with the craps table. And I generally hate craps.

Good lord, what can I say, slumping like a beast, down 8500 on the year, and just miserable about it. The worst part is feeling like you can't win, and in fact it becoming reality, lost 400 bucks yesterday playing friggin quarters!!!! Zero 4oak...grueling to say the very least, Tilt isn't even the word. Oh well things can only get better, right?!!

Had a first time experience, hit 4 a's with kicker playing quarters, switched to deuces wild and hit for 2's...guying sitting next to me went nuts...cashed out swearing, good times..someday I'll get motivated and put the pics up..someday

never let this thread fade yo!!

Yeah I hate that "can't win" feeling..the 8500 you lost is that 100% due to natural variance or was some of it due to tilt by playing too fast and making mistakes that might have cost you some big paying hands?

I think I do tend to play much faster when tilting, I would like to think I play well, don't make too many mistakes, I think we all miss hands from time to time...or I should say I do, but I really think it's important to play disciplined, and maybe that's why I have had some success, funny thing is, after I posted on Sunday, I went up for "fun" with some family, had a free 20 instant credit, was just going to chill and play with them, and after playing for approx 1500, with zero four of a kinds this.....

and, I was pretty relieved..

Sat down and the machine next to it and, approximately 300 bucks later....

Weird thing about it was 3 royals, and the aces all hit on a progressive bank within 2 hours of each other. This is weird to me, because I tend to be a conspiracy players card player, and it is the end of the month. I believe casinos like to meet their payout requirements towards the end of the month, and after bitching to my host of how brutal things have been for me...**** goes nuts..I don't always believe that ish....but you never know..he was there literally minutes after to "see how we were doing"...yeahhh...righhhht..
