.....................
my background is as a card counter
I have read every single well regarded book on blackjack
I was astonished to find the linked newspaper article which mentions something that to me is noteworthy when considering the history of blackjack
before seeing this article I have never heard of this incident , and neither have some blackjack experts since I have also posted this on the most popular BJ forum
one of the most interesting things about this article is that it predates Edward Thorp's famous book
Beat the Dealer which came out in 1962
Thorp is widely regarded to have been the first to codify a card tracking system that could allow the player to gain an advantage in the game of blackjack
this article indicates that he may not have been the first - although it's so long ago more details about the incident could not possibly be obtained
I had to retrieve this article, from 1960, from a newspaper that doesn't exist anymore - the
Independent Star News of Pasadena, CA
in order to post it so it was readable I had to take pieces of screenshots
all of the article is all there except for the last sentence which is:
Both of them were waiting eagerly last night for a chance to earn a lot more.
the end of the story says there will be a follow up tomorrow but I couldn't find it
the story is in these 4 links from Imgur.com
you will have to blow them up to read them - this is the best I could do - I'm not real geekay
if you click in the middle of the image - even though you don't see the usual prompt - Imgur.com will blow up the images for you so that they are easily readable
