Love the thread but I always was a bit bothered by you describing poster as dead/dying, because I just don't see it that way, as the games I play in are populated, active, fun, and I make a few bucks as a two-day a week hobby while I get actual real money and fulfillment elsewhere. But your statements in that clip helped clarify, that my games/experience are not what you are talking about, you are comparing to the heyday of live pro higher stakes LA poker pretty much, with which I have no experience. "It's a social club...PLUS MONEY!!!" as you said. which is exactly how I approach it. Watch some ball on the TV, shoot the ****, have a few drinks, and pull in an extra few grand cash per year. Well said.
He's saying it's not a career anymore. Not that poker is dead, or unprofitable, or that you won't make any money. You're just not making enough money now so that it would justify the time, energy, heartbreak, and cash you would have to go through to play full time. Week in, week out.
I don't think there's any questioning what the best route for players is today: Play. Play as much as you want and at as high of stakes as you want. But have a separate, solid stream of passive and/or active income so that you know you don't have to depend on that next card to pay your rent or put food on the table. You're still allowed to bink a tournament or go on a sun run in cash games.
It's just really rational, mature, sound advice for anyone putting time into the game here in now 2024 (!). He simply says the quiet parts out loud and exposes what he calls the Poker Industrial Complex for what it is.
