was playing a golf skins match with a guy and you could press when down and it doubled the bets. he pressed 2nd hole to $200 then 400,800,1600,3200 by like the 13th hole. he kept losing wanted to press to 6400 and i said no, he went crazy saying i was a piece of **** for getting him buried and not letting him have a chance to win etc etc. but i didn't want to problem of collection. so at the end of the match he owed like 25k and said he'd pay later he owed a lot more to his bookie. apparently when i denied the last press he called his bookie and asked if the bookie would take the press, the bookie said yes to that and another press he lost and he owed the bookie more than he owed me!!!!!

You mentioned Bobby Hoff as a great player and he was until he had a stroke, but I always thought his partner Carl McKelvey was a better player overall, I played in gams with both of them many times over the years. Carl is still playing 25-50 games in Texas at 80 y/o. Did you ever play much with Carl?

Didnt you also play in some of the San Fran games with people like El Diablo? Did you play with other 2p2 legend Ray Zee? Have a good story to share involving any of those 2p2 old timers?

I have played some with Carl. Confirmed still a good, winning player even at 80. Nice guy too.

1) nah, not even close, DGAF prob high on that list. I actually drank a lot more when I hosted PLO at the bike 2010-2016ish. they gave me $1000 a month in promotion money and i spent it all on wine for the table.

2) i heard about people doing it but im basically 90% retired and really lazy. if i do anything its mostly for fun, doesn't mean im not trying to win because winning is fun.

3) I try to sit at a table where someone is betting real big, then you can spread from minimum to whatever they are betting with no heat. I try to back count and wong in. hanging out w/big degens helps, going when high rollers are out in vegas helps. I never have huge BJ years because I live in LA, between banking LA games and Playing in vegas prob 50K cash and 10k comps would be a top year.

4) often. i let euro genders and asperger pros know they can easily be removed from all lists and invites and possibly be removed from the casino if they dont play nice. i let them know thy are in a great game and the game is not for them, its for the rec players and they need to be the best versions of themselves to hang around. ive never gone "fully private" like most games to keep these guys out, IME you can usually just mentor them. ive only had to ban two horrible offenders.

5) i tend not to say anything. often no one even believes you and it slows the game and causes an argument. i will always protect a rec player or someone who is good for the game i will basically never protect pros or nits. this is far different than buying a RFID table and sitting in security meetings and knowing everything about the operation, cameras, direction, and the lineup then planting yourself right in the middle of it with big money. imo, just my opinion. it just has a bad/smelly LOOK. even if everything is legit.

Smart move! I'm about the same age as you, also married forever and a DINK. Should be able to retire from corporate life in a year or two, waaaay early. People frequently ask me, "how can you afford to retire so early?" My response is usually some form of "How many kids do you have? 3? OK, how much do you figure you spend on three kids over 25+ years you are financially responsible for them, including college? A million or so? OK, how about instead you had banked every penny of that money and let compound growth take care of the rest over a few decades? Boom, early retirement."

Casinos want games they DONT have, if you can go to a casino and offer them something they DONT have they will pay you for it. In a card room (like LA) they will pay a lot, in a "real casino" they will pay a little. In a "real casino" thy want you at slots or in the pit so most dont give a **** about poaching a stud game they dont spread, in a card room that possible million a year in added rake is all gravy, its not pulling from other gaming.

You can basically walk up t a cardroom GM and say, "is see theres no mix game here, you want 25-50 horse? i play with a group and can spread it here at $11/half hour collection. it will run 5 days a week at least." you then make a deal for a cut of the rake or a flat fee and if you can deliver the goods youre set! its 10x harder than it seems and 99% of hosts go broke in their own game. but if you can do it its gravy time.

hes a trailblazer, a poker survivor, he has taken advice from me in the past and gotten paid to play/host poker. he could have went A LOT farther with it. Hes not lazy but seems to get very comfortable with small wins. this isn't necessarily a bad thing if that is the sweet spot where you want to be but you can't complain about it later. i am the same in some ways, im very happy where im at and dont want to do anything extra and i never complain, i built this spot for better or worse.

Earlier in this thread you briefly mentioned limit holdem. I played limit holdem at the 15/30 to 40/80 level in LA from 1987 to 2005 before switching to NL as the good limit games almost disappeared. I left LA in 2009 but may return soon. Recently I've noticed on Bravo that reasonably sized limit games seem to be going well at the Commerce and Bike (with the understanding that a 60/120 today would play about as big as a 40/80 back then adjusted for inflation).

Is limit holdem growing again in the big card clubs in LA or did I just look at Bravo on a good day for limit? Are the limit holdem games reasonably good or are they filled with grinders, nut-peddlers and old men? Good games would be similar to the limit holdem games at Hollywood Park from 1995 to 2005.

Best part of LA to move to for someone new to the area?

I used to play at "the palace" in Hayward before the boom. before 2003 No Limit holdem poker basically didn't exist, the palace was one of the few places that had it on the entire west coast. there were ZERO games in los angeles! I wrote a story about this long ago, its here on 2p2 somewhere under "limons lessons" i think.

the limit games aren't growing they just aren't shrinking, big public NLHE has basically disappeared. in 2007 there were 6++ $10-20 games going nightly in los angeles, now there are ZERO. the avg age in the limit games is about 65 but most aren't sophisticated players, still good value because its a solved game you can play close to perfect and squeak out every penny.
