i would say people coming from money using that as a crutch to keep failing until they make it is a modern phenomena. Dorks actually tell their parents they are playing poker "and crushing" now. When i started professional poker wasn't a thing, televised poker pros weren't a thing, online poker grinders from around the world weren't a thing, middle class (or upper) parents letting their kids "try poker as a career for a while" was like parents letting their kids try "robbing banks as a career for a while" it literally didn't exist. everyone who tried to make a living playing poker pre 2004 was willing to be seen as a semi criminal misfit and NEVER told their parents under any circumstances unless they wanted all help/money cut off and maybe an intervention. the one thing all OG pros have in common is this: we all ran like god at the beginning. its the only way anyone had a chance because there was ZERO family help for any of us and you couldn't "grind your way up" because the rake at the low levels of live poker is usury. you had to have no "bankroll management", run like god, play as big as possible, and figure it out as you went. We all built the plane while it was in the air.

The running like god thing is true for most people who needed to turn pro who started out playing in any era, but the games would’ve been so insane soft pre 2004 did you really need to run like god? if you knew what you were doing? I suppose your sentence about not grinding your way up as it was all in or nothing might relate to having to run like god but I’m sure it was piss easy to win in any event, variance couldn’t have been like it was today except if your whole roll was in the table (was that a thing?)

the games were "tough-ish" because its all relative. no one knew anything. TJ cloudier was considered an expert. You cant go back to 2004 with todays knowledge. Can you do a classic Limon rant on why button straddles are good, I’ve been in games in the Pacific NW and gulf coast with backpack boys/asperger misregs actively telling people not to Mississippi straddle and it drives me completely nuts. It’s bad enough they are all whiny nits but to actively lobby against action should be cause for an 86. I also prefer button straddles over UTG because my win rate is higher but obv I can’t say that the table.

Did anybody who owed you for 2020 welch? We have a local guy (lots of money, terrible at poker, aka he's great to have around) who is in the Trump cult hardcore, made a bunch of bets with people on the 2020 election, then welched on every one of them because, you know, "stolen election."

yes, they were VERY hard to collect and I had to make many deals to get paid and some refused to pay. I made a mistake by not having all the trump scum post the money. i should have known anyone who is in the cult of a cheating lying criminal scam artist isn't going to pay their debts. for this election all my bets with MAGA idiots are posted or escrowed so far.

Lesson learned, the only way I will bet with Trumptards this election is if someone holds the money in escrow. Too many of these scumbags will go all Marjorie Taylor Greene when Drumpf loses again..

Finally played with Limon today and he’s a great guy (even if it was briefly the worst 20/40 game I’ve played in a long time). 5 stars, would play again.

The other night in Reno, at the table there was an old guy from Texas with a ten-gallon hat, string tie, and a giant belt buckle he had won for bull-riding mumblety-ump years ago. Not only did he give me **** about my KN-95 mask, but he went on to boast to everyone that when he and his wife had covid, they treated it with ivermectin. Then he went on to talk about his cattle ranch. Alas, about half an hour after he sat down he got a call from his wife, and he picked up after having lost only about a quarter of his stack.

Sounds like the only thing missing was a MAGA hat and Alex Jones t-shirt, lol.
