That's an interesting way to ask the question. Yes, there's a certain amount of getting out of their comfort zones, and various mental game techniques can be used for this. But some of my more conservative students like playing the percentages and having an advantage. It takes a little convincing, but in many spots, the math supports the more aggressive, riskier plays. Once I'm able to prove this to them, either with a solver or an equity calculator or just running the EVs of different lines, they tend to be more open to these plays. You called it opening up to "inner degen" but when those who enjoy strategy games recognize that these plays are backed by solid strategy, there's no longer any conflict between the strategy side and what looks like high variance gambling on the surface.
