We recently announced that PokerStars expects to launch in New Jersey on Monday, March 21, 2016. In preparation for launch, I’ve created this thread to help answer any questions NJ residents may have and also share with you the below FAQ that will be helpful once you’re able to download the PokerStars NJ client from March 21.

As outlined on our PokerStarsNJ.com landing page, once you download the software and register using your existing PokerStars UserID, you will receive a VIP status and StarsCoin balance (formerly Frequent Player Points, converted at a 1.6 StarsCoin per FPP rate) based on your play history. The VIP status assigned to your PokerStars NJ account will be the higher of either your current existing PokerStars VIP status or your VIP status in April, 2011.

Here’s the FAQ with more information:

What needs to be done to start playing?

If you want to play real money games in New Jersey, you must create a new account on PokerStars NJ gaming platform. Quick account creation is accessible from either PokerStars NJ, or PokerStars.COM gaming clients.

What is Quick Account Creation?

It’s a guided process of PokerStars NJ account creation for play in the State of New Jersey for players that have existing accounts on PokerStars.com.

Please complete these simple steps:

1. Login using your existing account User ID and password
2. Review the on-screen information before you choose to proceed
3. Press ‘Create Account on PokerStars NJ’
4. You will see confirmation that your account was successfully created
5. a) If you logged in from PokerStars NJ software, you will be prompted to login to your new account, using the same User ID and password
b) If you logged in from another PokerStars software version, you will be prompted to upgrade the software version to PokerStars NJ
6. Upon login, you will be asked to acknowledge that you are at least 21 year of age and that you agree with our End User License Agreement
7. In order to play for real money, you will be required to complete electronic account verification. For your convenience, your personal details from your old account will be pre-populated for quick registration.

Your account will now be ready for play.

What will happen to my existing account?

Once you have created a new account on PokerStars NJ following the above steps, your old account will be closed.

What will happen to my account assets?

We will credit your new account with a VIP status, play money chips balance and StarsCoins (formerly FPPs) based on your historic play.

We are not able to offer any bonuses, T$ or tickets that were pending on your old account.

If you had a real money balance on your old account, which you haven’t cashed out, please email support@pokerstarsnj.com and we will advise you further how to cash out these funds.

Will I be able to play for Real Money against players from other countries?

Per the regulatory requirements in New Jersey, PokerStars NJ platform has a player pool limited to players physically located in the State of New Jersey only.

I am a non-US resident wanting to play Real Money Games on PokerStars NJ, can I?

You can only create a PokerStars NJ account and deposit if you have a valid SSN, a US postal address, and can meet the verification requirements. However, please be aware that you will not be able to play for real money unless you are physically located within the state of New Jersey.

What if I am a US resident outside of New Jersey, am I required to create an account on PokerStars NJ?

If you are not a resident of New Jersey, but are a US resident and would like to play our real money games and intend to visit the state of NJ now or in the future, we suggest opening a new PokerStars NJ account. Please be aware that you will not be able to play for real money unless you are physically located within the state of New Jersey.

Can I access my PokerStars NJ account outside of New Jersey?

Yes, you can log in and make a deposit or cash out request via the cashier, but you will be unable to play any Real Money games unless you are physically located within New Jersey.

What do I need to be able to play Real Money Games at PokerStars NJ?

The following criteria must be met to play at PokerStars NJ:

1) You must be 21 years of age or older
2) You must be physically located within New Jersey
3) You must have a Social Security Number and US postal address
4) You must have a PokerStars NJ account and complete electronic account verification

If I’m a non US resident visiting New Jersey, will I be able to play for Real Money?

No, you will be unable to play on PokerStars NJ. At present, in order to play Real Money games on PokerStars NJ you must have a Social Security Number (SSN) in order to complete account verification.

I am a US resident, can I access my original PokerStars account?

Yes. You are able to access your original PokerStars account, using the original PokerStars software, but you will be unable to play for real money.

Can I use the same User ID as I had before?

Yes, you can retain your User ID by following the Quick Account Creation process detailed above.

Can I change my old User ID during NJ account creation?

No, it is not possible to change your User ID as part of the Quick Account Creation process.

Can I create an account on PokerStars NJ and disregard my original PokerStars account?

Yes, you can opt to create a new account on PokerStars NJ and your existing account will be unaffected. However please note that you will not be able to use the same User ID unless you complete the quick account creation process from your original PokerStars account.

I am a resident of New Jersey, but I do not have an original PokerStars account. What do I do?

Welcome! All you have to do is download the PokerStars NJ software and follow the prompts to create a new account.

I forgot the User ID and password from my original PokerStars account, what do I do?

You will need to retrieve your User ID and password, using the original PokerStars software. Alternatively, you can create a new account on PokerStars NJ, however you will be unable to use your existing User ID unless you complete the quick account creation process from your original PokerStars account.

I am unable to access my original PokerStars account when I sign into PokerStars NJ, using my original PokerStars account details, why?

You will be unable to access your original PokerStars account on PokerStars NJ. You will only be able to create a new PokerStars NJ account with the same User ID and password, using the quick account process.

That sucks if your going to delete our old account why can't we make a new ID. Most people made these screen names when they were 18 and stupid. I for one would love to change mines.

You can make a new PokerStars NJ account with a new UserID, but you wouldn't get the benefits of the Quick Account Creation which takes into account your PokerStars play history (VIP Status and StarsCoin Balance).

Once we install the .nj client and move or create an account, will we still be able to run the .com client to observe pros and our friends playing on that site?

when full tilt points go to the pokerstars client will they be migrated over to PSNJ if i make an account there?

Good question. What about our old Full Tilt points/status? I played much more there than I did on Stars.

What limits do you plan to offer for NLHE & LHE?

Is it possible for one to create a NJ account with a new user ID (not the same user ID that was used on Stars pre-April, 2011) and still have one's account credited with a VIP status, play money chips balance and StarsCoins (formerly FPPs) based on one's historic play?

Obviously, one would want those benefits based on historic play, but one may not want to use the old user ID.


I e-mailed support and asked this question and was told that it could be done, but reading the original post in this thread makes the answer look like no.

Any chance this will be changed and new user IDs will be allowed with such benefits?

Is it possible for one to be told exactly what VIP Status and Starscoin Balance benefits one would receive if one kept the old user ID before making the decision on whether to keep the old user ID or set up a new one without the benefits?

Customer support has been lacking on the current NJ sites, IMO, so it would be nice if you or one of your representatives were a steady presence in this thread.

Also, why do Americans get the 1.6 FPP>StarsCoin rate when you imposed a much lower rate on everyone else? Seems interesting that it was perfectly fair, but not fair enough for a heavily regulated site.

+1. I feel like the answer is going to be no, but I hope Im wrong. This would benefit anyone who either didnt play much on Stars pre BF (but plays regularly on the NJ sites), wasnt old enough to play pre BF, or just plays much more volume now then they used too.

One thing that baffles me is why PokerStars.NJ wont be allowed to interact with pools from PokerStars.com international pools, when American horse racing pools are co-mingled with not only bettors from every other state, but other international countries as well. How can horse racing pari-mutual gambling pools be allowed to co-mingle with other states and countries, yet poker tournament pools (essentially the same thing) cannot? Seems like it would fall under the same jurisdictional overseer with the same laws being applicable.

I was actually on the phone with the top regulator overseeing pari-mutual pools in Arizona discussing a math discrepancy of a pari-mutual payout at Turf Paradise, and was told there was money being bet in Germany that was part of the pool that was a different take out rate (rake).

I'm almost positive that Monmouth Park and Meadowlands (New Jersey horse racing tracks) have their pari-mutual pools together with international bettors as well. While I'm sure your army of corporate lawyers have already looked into the law, it seems un-constitutional to allow horse racing pari-mutual pools to be international, and yet, poker tournament pools, which is the same premise of gambling player vs player pari-mutual pools with a house take out, is restricted to New Jersey residents only.
