The word 'entrepreneur' is turning into a red flag for me... The word 'entrepreneur' is turning into a red flag for me...

At this point I can't remember that last time I heard someone I respected call themselves an 'entrepreneur'. It's become an enormous tell for posers, borderline scammers (usually trying to sell me on being an entrepreneur like them), and idiots.

Has anyone else noticed this? Bull markets sure are weird.

I find they typically fall into two categories:
1. people who are struggling in their business, usually due to their own inadeqaucies
2. people who lack the ability to stick with anything, so they call themselves serial entrepreneurs

I always thought it meant "can't get a job".

Mods, can we rename this useless thread to "Wage Slave Pity Party"? Thanks in advance.

3. Dudes trying to sound successful/impressive on dating sites. The male equivalent of "model/brand ambassador".

This. This hasn't changed one bit since the .com bubble.

I play poker and am part owner of 3 different businesses. I've averaged about 100k/year the last few years so nothing great, but I'm not living in my Mom's basement either. I've never called myself an "entrepreneur"(seems weird unless I was a millionaire businessman), but i'm never sure how to succinctly tell people what I do when they ask in casual conversation. Thoughts?

Pick a narrative that suits your goals and simply run with it; in some social/business circles you might prefer to label yourself "software engineer" and for others maybe it's simply "project manager".

This is one of those terms where I think it's ok to be labeled as such by others, but god help you if you self-identify as this.

I just tell people I'm unemployed. It flushes out the gold digging whores early, and you appear modest for when people find out later you're actually doing very well.

LOL that's pretty much the opposite of 'entrepreneur'. Especially if you're super super young. "I've made enough money..." is a pretty strong statement under the age of 40.

Entrepreneur
noun
"a person who sets up a business or businesses, taking on financial risks in the hope of profit."

I think everyone on this thread failed English. You don't need to be a successful businessman to be called it, its simple someone who takes risk for opening a business meaning literally ANYONE who opened a business is an entrepreneur. If that pisses you off then you're ******ed.

Despite what girls say, they love an arrogant dude. Stop trying to downplay your accomplishments pussies.

Yo bro, this is a fully sick smackdown of the imbeciles in this thread!

Or maybe words have connotations and meanings that supersede the dictionary meaning?

1. You're not my brother
2. Words can't be sick, let alone "fully sick"!
3. No one got body slammed
4. Imbeciles is being used figuratively; they're not literally ******ed or even unintelligent
5. The said imbeciles aren't really literally physically in the thread!

Few girls worth dating like an arrogant guy. If you're chasing gold digging whores (note: they aren't really literally digging for gold!), then sure, flaunt your wealth. Most of the women worth dating prefer someone understating their wealth.

This thread is about the actually successfully self employed making fun of people who call themselves 'entrepreneur' every six sentences. These people are hilariously fun to make fun of. **** the reddit thread I made around the same time as this did well because these people are everywhere and super silly.

EDIT: And I'm not sorry for making fun of them either. Super pretentious and usually their 'entrepreneurial plan' is teaching ME to be a 'successful entrepreneur' like them. I don't know what book they all read but I don't read **** like that so I have no idea which one it was. If I had to guess I'd say the 4 hour workweek probably brought these tools on.

I don't see a difference between the proletariat and low-end (wage level profit) service providers. You're still hiring out your abilities and your time for money on roughly a 1:1 basis, without leveraging capital or leaching off the labor of others. The service providers are just proles who've swapped one long term boss for many (and more demanding) short term bosses.

The really wide version of the word 'entrepreneur' includes anyone self employed. By this standard people who go through garbage dumps in India looking for salvage are entrepreneurs.

The word as defined is totally meaningless except as a comparative descriptor 'so and so is more entrepreneurial than so and so' is the best possible usage of the word.

I think if you derive a decent living income from starting a new business, you can call yourself an entrepreneur.

And yeah, success is part of something if you're going to claim it, whatever the dictionary says. Otherwise the fat guy at the gym doing weights is an athlete, and the guy hitting on random girls and getting rejected 100% of the time is a pick up artist.
