They just want to make sure you aren't a dirty prole that's going to knife them, they all know how much they deserve it.

Define class. Someone who has rich parents and has plans on leaching off them? No judgment there, but if you're trying to avoid gold diggers on principle (as opposed to being too broke to afford someone with those kinds of expectations) you should find that type of 'class' to be just as distasteful.

You can call it class if you want ... i've known plenty of people who come from money and generally the only people it's taboo with are the ones who aren't self sufficient and never will be (men and women). In every single case the women i've known who don't like talking about money are the ones who're broke and/or dependent on men, and in every single case the women i know who have professional aspirations and have made prudent financial decisions are happy to talk about it.

Class is growing up around highly competent people with means, taking on their social values and knowing their unspoken rules. Although the latter is actually sufficient, but not easy to get to without the former.

Agreed that self starters and independent thinkers have fewer inhibitions. Disagree completely that polite society is ok with talking about money except for the spoiled. Part of being polite is discussing it if someone wants to...doesn't mean you don't squirm inside or think less of the person.

The girl next to me at work is recently single and trolling tinder. She was interested in a guy who told her he was an "entrepreneur" and she told me that made her think he was a broke loser.

Probably a solid read. Did she inquire further or did she just let it go and stick with her read?

Politeness as it relates to ‘class’ generally has to do with the way you conduct yourself with people you don’t have a personal relationship with. Ie: not talking about religion, politics, sex or money in a way that might push people’s buttons. Developing intimacy is the process of getting past that.

No woman wants to be in a relationship with a perfect gentleman.

It's also (in the US anyway) refraining from ostentatious in-your-face displays of wealth. For example, I know at least one person who got AMEX to send him a platinum centurion card because he thought the black card was just too stupid although it actually made sense for him to have the centurion card. (He's basically the unofficial travel agent for his rather wealthy family that likes to travel and he buys luxury goods for resale in countries that just saw their currencies crash).

But to answer your question OP, this is a trend that has been 300+ years in the making. Before the industrial revolution, merchant classes in western civilization were looked down upon, it was seen as a mostly vulgar profession. It was much more honorable to be a member of the landed gentry, clergy, and scholarly classes. If you were an English gentleman in the 17th century and you made a lot of money from business interests, you would be keeping that information on the down low, you wouldn't be broadcasting that information like we do today as an act of self promotion.

However, this all changed with the industrial revolution in England and the Netherlands, and business people have been hoisted from their vulgar status into the highest ranks of society. Today, we celebrate business. This shift in ideology in the Western world is one the largest reasons we enjoy such a high standard of living.

The highest status people in the world are not crotchety old scholars or aristocrats. It's the Jeff Bezozes and Elon Musks that dominate headlines and earn the reverence and awe of the unwashed masses. Naturally, this shift in the caste system has changed the goals and motivations of the average man. If being a successful business person is where it's perceived you can achieve high status in life, that's naturally what a lot of people will strive for.
