Think I like gambit.

Is it really that unsafe to keep coins on an exchange? I only have a laptop now and I'm scared I'll somehow get a virus or have one currently. I feel it can't be the unsafe to have them on an exchange but I know nothing about cryptocurrency and just started reading about them this past week. Thanks for any info for this noob.

If that is your only short term option, I would spread risk around on several exchanges.

2nd q: I have eth tokens such as REP/WINGS. should I save them under the same wallet as my eth or separately, and why?
1) privacy. its giving access to your accounts full tx history.

2) if you can store them in the same wallet, go for it. seems more convenient that way.

note you can NOT store tokens in a coinbase eth wallet

I have a question about security. Can 25th word aka passphrase that can be added to seed words be brute forced with computer and if it can how strong should it be to protect against it?

If the attack has the other 24 words, then yes it can be brute forced. You can just google how strong a password needs to be to not be vulnerable to brute force. If you just make it long enough and truly random, then the risk is not that it will be brute forced, but that the attacker will get access to the password.

How many guesses per second can attacker make?

You shouldn't trust yourself to remember the key anyway, if there'se enough in the wallet to warrant this level of safety. So since you will have the password written down somewhere, somehow, why not make it 24 characters long, totally random?

If you want it to be convenient to type in for regular use, then it will probably not be safe from password cracking, and you should keep your other seed words safe.

It depends, with some BIPs it is harder. But assume millions per second unless there is some strong protection. If some more serious organisation is doing it, assume trillions. Check for example https://lbc.cryptoguru.org/about which has searched >2140 trillion bitcoin keys already...

Fun fact, here are all bitcoin keys:

If passphrase need to be just good enough to protech against really unlikely scenario of theft and against thieves that wouldn't be that savy in crypto then 24 charachter would be overkill and could possible be more dangerous for mistake with typing.

In that case, I guess 8+ characters, not "password123" and the like. It's up to you how secure you want to be, we can't tell you that. Assume it's like regular password cracking.

Am i right that there is no way to see my ETH balance on the nano s ledger itself? I will always need a PC to plug it into and view the balance on the ledger wallet?

Also, it's my understanding that if I lose the nano s ledger hardware, I can still recover my ETH? How would I do that? And if the ledger wallet site ceases to exist, how about then?

Copy your eth address, bookmark it on etherscan and you can always check it to make sure you haven't been hacked.

Copy down your 24 word recovery phrase. If you lose your nano or it breaks you can recover it via this phrase. If ledger site goes down, you can still recover it elsewhere, mew site for example, with this phrase.

Ripple seems like it will serve a purpose for banks, Idk anything about dash.

I would be long on Ripple fwiw. But I don't have any money in it currently. Also plz don't take my advise and trade/invest on it.

Ripple is generally hated by crypto fans. It's not really decentralized. But it does serve a purpose and is attractive to banks and if they get on board it could be worth more. The founders control the vast majority of the supply of tokens

Most tokens are pure crap. If you don't know how to hold a token yourself and need to keep it on exchange it's likely even more crap.

Guys super newb question I just can't wrap my brain around.

What do the markets on Bittrex even mean? Why is there a Bitcoin market and an Ethereum market? Why do they share some of the same coins like ETC but at different prices/gains?

you can buy altcoins with BTC or ETH as the underlying currency. similar to how stock shares can be quoted in USD, CAD, etc

Say litecoin and bitcoin increase equally in a day and eth stays the same. The LTCBTC (buying litecoin with bitcoin) pair stays flat and the LTCETH pair increases.

Hey guys few questions i like to ask.

1. Im thinking about getting ETH, litecoin and zcash. I heard a lot of things about ETH. Does anyone know what is the best way for me to get ETH, litecoin and zcash? I can get bitcoin due to many gambling sites paying out via bitcoin. But i would definitely like to get ETH, litecoin and zcash. I heard coinbase is not really good and limits are low. I would probably like to get around 10k in ETH, 3k in litecoin and maybe around 5k in zcash.

2. Wallet recommendations for litecoin and zcash? I use electrum with btc and its great. I heard good things about myetherwallet for ETH. When researching litecoin, apparently electrum has an ltc wallet. Anyone have experience with this? If it works exactly like how electrum works with bitcoin, well thats what im going with.

3. Is it easy to get around 3-5k of each of those 3 coins? I did saw online there are sites/services where they actually convert ETH or BTC for you and other coins as well. So is doing that better than buying bitcoin with bank transfer/wire etc? Or do those services charge you a good amount of vig? I checked myetherwallet and it seems like if you want to get btc for eth and vice versa, they seem to give you the market rate which is very good. Anyone have thoughts on this or opinion?

Thanks all.
