But if you look at ethereum it was the same thing. Buy crowdsale July 2014, not released until July 2015. Since then it is almost 400x.
400x is a stretch since it was paired with BTC then, not with USD. It was 1 BTC = 2000 ETH for it's ICO, and it's now 1 BTC = ~20 ETH approx, so 100x, not 400x

1 BTC was worth ~$600 at the time. Got you 2,000 ETH. Eth is currently $93.72

$93.72 x 2,000 eth = $187,440 / $600 = 312.40x

yes, but you bought them with BTC, not with USD. Like you can say "wow im up 30% USD value holding an altcoin in the last 3 months" but BTC is up 100%, and you bought it with BTC. so had you just held the BTC you'd be up more $. The performance has to be relative to it's pairing (BTC), not to some other fiat that makes you feel good. it was 1 BTC = 2000 ETH. Now it's 1 BTC = ~20 ETH, looking at it any other way is a really poor way to approach investing.

Your way is poor imo. July 2014, someone has never owned crypto. They don't like bitcoin. They really like ethereum. Unfortunately for them, the only way to get Ether is to buy Bitcoin. So they put in $600 to get a bitcoin and immediately deposit it to the crowdsale. Now they have 2,000 eth. Should they really be comparing their gains to btc rather than fiat when the only reason they bought btc in the first place was to convert it to eth? I don't think so.

But yes, for a lot of the ICOs, the question for most is not only will this ico go up, but will it go up at a greater rate than eth?

if you want to represent like 2% of the people who invested in the crowdsale as your model then sure I guess. I was here for it in 2014, and maybe like 1% of the people I know who invested in ETH weren't already invested in crypto and holding BTC at the time. I'll just say you're right though, 400x returns, ETH is the best! moon moon moon!

If you look at it from a tax perspective it's also 400x.

Yes but if you bought BTC just to by ETH with BTC you essentially bought with USD.

Just fwiw

Any time you sell crypto, even if you do not touch usd, e.g. Sold btc and bought eth via btc/eth pair it is a taxable event relative to your cost basis on btc

So

If you moved eth to buy an ico

That is a taxable event.

Also that is if you are a private citizen. If you set up an ltc, my understanding is that you can net gain/losses.

So in summary: it is actually extremely advantageous for you to be a verified account holder at an exchange that possesses fiat services. This is of course assuming you are a honest tax paying citizen.

Further, banks** (not the govt!!) do not consist tether a digital currency. So it is possible that if you exchange usd for tether, despite slippage, you are not entering a taxable event when you purchase crypto using tether

What are peoples thoughts about creating an ETH thread? Is there enough people out there like me who are right now interested in ETH only? I've had several PM's from people looking to learn more about it and been happy to help, but if there's enough people with varying knowledge on it we could keep a good discussion going about it where it could be worth it to those participating and reading.

I assume ETH and ETH assets? But yes, I think we should split ETH from Ripple, Potcoin and Tezos discussions.

Tokens would work nice for buying action. Create a "white paper" , a list of all tournaments you plan on playing, maybe some percent of cash game winnings too. Create a token, like on the waves platform. Then you play your tournament schedule and some number of hours playing cash, then give stakers, token holders, their % of winnings, some dividend....
I don't know. You get the idea. Blockchain tech would work nice if your a player looking to be staked.
On waves you can create a token and pay token holders in some other currency, like bitcoin. You can give weekly or monthly payments based on your winnings in btc or whatever. Eventually you could have multiple poker players tokens and trade them on the DEX. Nice.
