There is close to $1,000,000,000 in alltcoins. While it is certainly very speculative and full of crap, there is probably some money to be made. I would guess in twelve months the market cap of altcoins will be higher than that and further, that the top ten altcoins have a higher concentration of the money than they do now.
Almost all is in Ripple, which isn't really a coin, and almost all is privately held by creators and released if the value goes up. It's like I could sell you a TomCollinsCoin for $.0000001 and keep 1 trillion of them and have a huge market cap.
The market for alt-coins, based on what is actually available, is incredibly small, and shrinking in the pure junk ones, and the ones that are actually innovative are making up the bulk. That and Litecoin and Dogecoin. Dogecoin has some legs and bark, but only because it's a toy.
