TSLA showing cracks? TSLA showing cracks?

Toothsayser,

Yeah will look into ootm calls - cheers. Famous last quotable words here but not going to cover. I will only really start to feel the pain at 1.5K or so as I didn’t use too much leverage and wanted an amount I could hold for months. Unless we think 1.5+ is say >30% to happen would I reevaluate this.

I have been very consistently saying that I think TSLA is overvalued, dramatically so probably, but I think it's a bad short because I don't see a short term catalyst.

I also explained why: the investment bull thesis was basically a dream about much longer term fantasy and not something that could be proven false in the short, or even medium term.

I made the mistake of shorting a stock because I was convinced it was dramatically overvalued and just thought "this can't last." That stock was Amazon. I still remember raging about AMZN calling advertising expense extraordinary/1-time and excluding it from their operating income. I also remember writing emails and reading newsletters that basically argued: even if AMZN gets 100% of bookselling business and get the margins it thinks it can, the company was still dramatically overvalued.

Shorting AMZN was one of the defining experiences in my trading career that really drove home the point that "the stock is overvalued/fraud/blah blah blah and reality has to take over at some point" is an insufficient basis for shorting a stock. You need to identify what bulls think (therefore the support for the stock price) and see if there is a viable short term catalyst to destroy the bull thesis/support.

Now I am dating myself and I feel old.

@Grizy:
It was never my intention to short a parabolic stock - but that was before it became parabolic I was always good in staying clear from stocks such as TLRY and BYND from the short side, because I simply didn't see it as a viable short play. I guess the only mistake I made was NFLX back in 2015, but was able to throw in the towel for a lot cheaper than I just did with TSLA.

But TSLA was always pretty straight forward 2014 and onwards. The news that came out last few quarters, I didn't see that as a catalyst to move the price to these levels and beyond.

Having said all that, just staying clear of shorting any stock (or puts at best) and solely focus on longing stock would save a lot of headache for the future onwards.

The price is just being jacked up by momo traders ping ponging it back and forth and retail. Or as some people suspect, it could also be massive hedging from Saudi money after the Aramco IPO to buy green stocks. This won't end well.

I imagine the stock will collapse when the convert holders convert and dilute the shareholder base to close out their hedges.

Short interest is going to increase as it goes parabolic which is going to create a vicious cycle. There's a chance we go to $2000 before Feb option expiry.

Gonna wait till October to short short based off this potentially useless observation.

This. It's a generational short opportunity waiting to happen.

This is solid advice and a very good story. Though it must be stated that you were dead wrong about "reality taking over", as amazon ultimately proved you wrong. So, when did you change your mind about the stock itself?

I don't think I ever changed my mind. It was more just like "I don't get this **** and I am tired of losing money. I am just going to trade stocks/futures I actually understand."

Yeah if this was a penny stock (the graph the past two weeks looks just like it) it would open at $1100-$1200 tomorrow then crash to $800 by end of day.

How do you come up with $2,000 possible tomorrow? Doesn't sheer size start to limit what it can do here-
