We are working on some product ideas with friends and after some discussion we realised that the biggest leak we all have is that we're not sure how to properly market our products. Some ideas we are working on are apps and some are items that would need door to door approach. So what can we read or study in online courses?

Stumbled across this list of books from March 2017:

61 Books Nassim Taleb Recommends you Read

For each book, Taleb gives a brief ~1 paragraph write-up for why it's worth reading.

Haha for as fun as that list was to read, I've read zero of those 61 books.

I'm intrigued by his comments for book #8 regarding Markowitz/MPT vs the Kelly criterion, especially this:

"And model error is much, much milder under Kelly criterion."

The estimation/model error issues with Markowitz/MVO/MPT are well documented, but I think it's also a problem with the Kelly approach (or any approach where the true probability distribution is unknown). I might give that a closer look or do some of my own simulations sometime soon.

yea OSAM has been killing it recently. Their Hinkie podcast interview was a fun mix of bball + investing + data (for any NBA fans looking for something a bit lighter)

Personally, I'd just load up on statistics books. Whatever your local college/university has as its texts (and then audit courses if you can't slog through the books on your own). That is probably not an answer that will make you happy, but if you like learning, it is good for you.

Believe it or not, I have not actually read every book in existence, so I cannot comment on Harris' book.

I know this is an old thread but do you have any recommendations for statistics books? Or MOOCs perhaps?

Appreciate any response thanks.

I dont. It has been well over 20 years since I taught statistics. Perhaps someone younger and/or still teaching can chime in.

Any recommended reads that focus on transfer agents, clearing houses, regulators, dtcc, etc. Looking for a better understanding of how the underlying plumbing works and where there are inefficiencies.

Reading partner wanted

Partner picks a book for me to read, I pick one for them

I read book and make a thorough report/summary like an in-depth cliff notes along with personal experience as it relates to book. My partner does the same with his or her book.

Books should be finance related, fairly popular, and not too technical/ around 300 pages

Swap reports and double our effective reading

What you will generally find is that sentiment indicators are basically a good indication of what has recently happened. When stocks are rising, sentiment is high, etc. You can probably get a pretty good sense of what has happened in the markets by looking at what has happened in the markets.

There has been some research on sentiment as a predictor*, but I haven't read any in years.** If you find anything good, please report back. You might find something additive to what you can get from looking at recent price trends and momentum.

*extremes of sentiment and inflections in sentiment.

**it didn't increase the accuracy of my models, so I gave up on it

Unfortunately, costs ~$70/ month to gain access to the data. Very worth it imo. Guy who runs the site is former margin desk manager at major wall street firm. Realized after working the desk for years that emotions/sentiment played a major role in market moves etc. Pretty sure you can sign up for a free trial though.

Another good one for free that is ukarlewitz on twitter. Not necessarily all sentiment, but good analysis. Believe he is wharton educated and worked at some firm before going solo. https://twitter.com/ukarlewitz. Has a good blog called fat-pitch.

It's important to remember that no site/ book/ mentor is going to make you profitable or good. It's going to take years of hard work to understand what drives markets and prices, as well as figure out your own style of trading/investing. GL! It's an endlessly fascinating game!

Also, a lot of sentiment "analysis" is just being "in tune" with the market and not getting caught up in the latest trends. Recent trends where you could really see the froth was the WSB options fest. This shows up in the data, but you could almost taste the greed just by reading the posts around twitter or the threads in this forum.

In a similar vein, the same can be said for the short vol bubble that occurred in late 2017-18. Everyone was talking about how easy a trade it was etc. Takes a long time to get a good feel though and then have the ability to trade it well.

Another old trick is the proliferation of new products in a "hot" market. Think recently the addition of the micro index futures. The introduction of long vol products in late '08. The introduction of micro gold futures in 2010. Bitcoin futures etc. Not going to mark an exact turning point but it gives you a good idea that retail/ dead money is rushing in and playing the game.
