Re: The "What the hell should I read?!" Thread. Books, Blogs, and News

We are working on some product ideas with friends and after some discussion we realised that the biggest leak we all have is that we're not sure how to properly market our products. Some ideas we are working on are apps and some are items that would need door to door approach. So what can we read or study in online courses?

Stumbled across this list of books from March 2017:

61 Books Nassim Taleb Recommends you Read

For each book, Taleb gives a brief ~1 paragraph write-up for why it's worth reading.

Haha for as fun as that list was to read, I've read zero of those 61 books.

I'm intrigued by his comments for book #8 regarding Markowitz/MPT vs the Kelly criterion, especially this:

"And model error is much, much milder under Kelly criterion."

The estimation/model error issues with Markowitz/MVO/MPT are well documented, but I think it's also a problem with the Kelly approach (or any approach where the true probability distribution is unknown). I might give that a closer look or do some of my own simulations sometime soon.

yea OSAM has been killing it recently. Their Hinkie podcast interview was a fun mix of bball + investing + data (for any NBA fans looking for something a bit lighter)

It is a good movie, so it is a question of whether you like your desert before or after the meal.

Personally, I'd just load up on statistics books. Whatever your local college/university has as its texts (and then audit courses if you can't slog through the books on your own). That is probably not an answer that will make you happy, but if you like learning, it is good for you.

Believe it or not, I have not actually read every book in existence, so I cannot comment on Harris' book.

I know this is an old thread but do you have any recommendations for statistics books? Or MOOCs perhaps?

Appreciate any response thanks.

I dont. It has been well over 20 years since I taught statistics. Perhaps someone younger and/or still teaching can chime in.

Any recommended reads that focus on transfer agents, clearing houses, regulators, dtcc, etc. Looking for a better understanding of how the underlying plumbing works and where there are inefficiencies.

Reading partner wanted

Partner picks a book for me to read, I pick one for them

I read book and make a thorough report/summary like an in-depth cliff notes along with personal experience as it relates to book. My partner does the same with his or her book.

Books should be finance related, fairly popular, and not too technical/ around 300 pages

Swap reports and double our effective reading
