I noticed OP hasn't been updated since 2009 - any additions to those books? Have any fallen out of favor? Looking for some reading over the next few months and would like to dive into finance/investing.

"trading in the zone" and "dual momentum".

the first one is about the mindset, the second about investing.

btw rereading the list in 1st page after all these years and after i have some knowledge make me says that a lot of them are worthless..

i read market wizard, soros on soros, fooled by randomness, reminiscence of stock operator.
probably even liars poker and the big short

that kind of book have very few things about how one could print money via finance, i wouldn't reccomend them...

clearly i haven't read all those 41 pages of the 3d, but i'm sure a lot of people will agree with me...

The main reason why I'm replying is because if you're interested in reading that book, there is a project called "Good Judgment Open" where you can actually enter and participate in the forecasts. I was thinking about signing up and checking it out, but I haven't had a lot of time to dedicate towards it yet with everything else I've been doing.

I'll go ahead and answer my own question: over the past couple months, I've made my way through both The Intelligent Investor (the 1972 version with postscript additions from 2003ish) and Stocks For The Long Run (2013 update) and found both to be excellent reads. I read them mostly in 30 minute chunks on my commute, and wish I had the chance to reach them in longer sessions, but still felt like the information was presented in such a simple way that I, as someone brand new to investing and finance, could understand. I recommend both books, in that order, to anyone new to this field that is looking for entry-level info.

Psychology of Trading by Steenbarger was my favorite trading book I have ever read. He just came out with a new book recently, looking forward to reading that as well. Trading Psychology 2.0

Hi

I have two questions.
I see myself in the future wanting to not spend not more then 5-10 hours a week on investing.
With this smaller amount of hours/week what type of investment area would be recomended?

Not sure how relevent the amounts are but will at least be a few 100ks probably a few millions.

and what would then be the recomended books and other learning resources given the recommended investment type?

kind regards

/Fox

What's the best read if I have an idea and want to start a business out of it?

Things I am interested in learning more about:

1) protecting my idea - getting a patent for it in the beginning stages

2) hiring people at the start with limited funding. give up equity or a small wage

3) getting larger scale funding from VCs or other

1) this is BS, idea is worth almost 0, it all goes with the execution.
related, i suggest you to read "4 hour workweek" to get into the entrepreneurship mindset, but it's controversial, so, i told you

2) here i'd go with "venture deals", but i think it's too advanced for you, if you have limited amount of money, you cannot hire someone good, if you hire someone who is not good, then your company is ****ed because you'll hire people worse and worse than you.. see guy kawasaki "who to hire" on youtube and also see all his "art of the start" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vC9D9GaAz-E and also this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RfWgVWGEuGE (imo, you should look the whole course)

3) again, "venture deals", but, here you need to be able to be a salesperson, so i'd suggest you "how to win friends and influence people" (really simple principles, but they are so obvious that we often forget) and "cashvertisting"

if i were you, i'd go in this order to maximize the efficency:
cashvertising, so that you understand the psychology behind the whole sale process of what you are going to read
4 hour workweek, to get the entreprenurial mindset
art of the start, kawasaki
how to start a startup, stanford course, on youtube
how to influence people
venture deals, really boring, about laws and stuff, you don't really need it, but you asked for it, so...

Finished reading Trading in the Zone couple of weeks ago. For trading, this would be the first book I would recommend above Psychology of Trading. Wish I read Trading in the Zone earlier in my trading career. Actually, wish I read it before I ever started trading.

I've been offered to buy in to the Architectural firm that I've worked at for the past 8 years. Its only a 10 person company with 2 owners, one who is 52, one who is 42. I'm the 2nd most senior person behind them. Question for you guys is, what are some good reliable resources, whether online or good books, for me to read through to be able to make the best decisions during negotiations? I don't have much experience on the business side of things and want to educate myself so that i can ask the right questions and ultimately negotiate the best deal for myself.

Last year was the best year the company has ever had, so i think the price will be somewhat inflated, which my boss has already mentioned trying to find a fair price considering that.

Thanks in advance.

This is my favorite trading book ever. The psychological aspects are the hardest part to conquer and this book covers them well. I reread it often and am due for at least another skimming.

The first time I read it, it blew me away. It was as if it was written specifically for me and I was wondering how this guy got into my head I can't recommend this book highly enough. His first book "The Disciplined Trader" is good too but Trading in the Zone takes it to a whole new level.

mmm... i don't understand what are you saying.. you mean you are getting some share of the business and you want to make sure that what you are getting is a fair amount for a fair price?

so you need to evaluate the small local business, right?

mmm.. this is very hard to do, you can't apply dcf or other models, it's more art than a science...

Hello, I am reading security analysis from Graham. Could someone help me understand what this means: Graham advices that it is better to sacrifice quick marketability to attractive value rather than vice versa.

I'm not sure, but he'd rather take something really deep underwater (attractive value) that is not clear when it will recover, than something that is already on the rise (quick marketability).

basically he is saying to anticipate the move, be contrarian, go long in accumulation phase and avoid overcrowded trades.

this is my interpretation, i haven't read the book though.

i'm reading this one, i thought i knew everything after having read "trading in the zone", but it's a 1990 book, this one has just come out. really well ahead of this time, really interesting and i believe one of the most insightful book for me.

the problem is that it is too long and he uses too many personal facts like when he talks of his cats :S

Hi guys!

I'm an entrepreneur-minded guy with a poker background and MSc in economics. In the last couple years I have also learned programming in my freetime (python/flask/mongodb). I do find programming and data analysis extremely enjoyable.

Any book recommendations for finding a great business niche, starting a business or just general entrepreneurship?

Thanks!

I don't like Steenbarger but would like to hear more about this one as I am a sucker for trading psychology. The fact that Trading in the Zone is older doesn't mean much because trading psychology is pretty much timeless and Trading in the Zone is my bible.

Would like to hear what if anything the new Steenbarger could add

well, I took notes about things I didn't know/were interesting, I took like 70 pages of notes, I usually make 20 page per book...

He talks about peak performances (not only regarding trading), adaptability, the trader like entrepreneur, how being detached and emotionless is not the key anymore, how to improve your environment, how to link best practice to actions...

he takes references from "thinking fast and slow" and "power of habits" and other books

then he goes into some tips, like having a vlog instead of a manual diary when you state how you feel during a trade, what mistake did you make, what you were trying to accomplish, or using an heart rate monitor during your trading and look at the biofeedback.

it's not only just about trading, it's about peak performance...

the last part is a shameful joint venture with his trader friends to market something, most of the advices are redundant there, but still worth looking at...
