A question to those who dropship alibaba products

I see alibaba is a popular distributor for a lot of dropshippers, my question is probably too stupid and obvious but i really dont understand why such method works in the first place considering the buyer can go himself on alibaba and buy the product for a smaller prize instead of buying it from you on your site or amazon/ebay, i can understand about cases where you can buy a product very cheaply and resell it but i dont understand how you can dropship higher volumes in this manner.
I plan to open an amazon shop and use alibaba as my distributor too since i cant find wholesalers anywhere else but i fail to understand why that works.
