Hello -

I am going to be taking Optiver's numerical exam soon - I was wondering if anyone here has taken it/had any advice.

I have searched rather furiously online for the difficulty of the questions, but I haven't been able to come up with anything.

Some people are saying try "tradertest.org" but what level should I be concentrating on there?..if at all

Thanks for any comments or suggestions!

I took it a couple months ago. Didn't pass. It's pretty frickin' hard. My only advice is to work quickly because the score is partially based on how many you get through. Can't remember the scoring formula but you should be able to find it online.

I have had it sitting in my inbox for like 6 weeks. Probably should have done it a while ago...

I took this a couple years ago, back then I believe was 55 pts in 1 minute. I think like 80-100 questions total. You get +1 for right answer and -1 for wrong. You can't skip questions, they stop grading where you skip.

Question were just basic math, like .008 * .0014

I passed it but didn't do well in the live interview. Very cool environment, super smart people.

I'm pretty solid at this kind of thing. How does this help you or is it job specific?

Its used as the first filter in the interview process. Only like 15% pass I think. These type of tests are popular in trading since generally you need high aptitude in mental math and quick thinking.

Why not just take the test. If you can't pass it without practicing then you have no chance to get through the rest of their interview process.

i heard that it's basically:

get ur mental math to really good speed
make sure u know the notation ahead of time. i think division is a different symbol (might be outdated)

idk about future rounds

I took the test about 3 years ago out of Chicago branch. Part 1, was pretty much what's posted above. Passed that. Next, I took a "what number comes next test". For example (2, 4, 6, 8, ???) and (1, 4, 9, 16, ???). Obviously much harder than the examples I gave. There were 25 of these total and I believe I answered about 21 of them, ~18 where I was very confident in my answer.

Had a phone interview, then a live interview. Didn't hear back after live interview.

I recently took Tibra's numerical reasoning exam - didn't pass , but I did some searching before and found that Tibra was started by Optiver guys, and the tests were similar. But I heard a lot of the things that people are saying here: very fast math computing test, and to try this test:

http://arithmetic.zetamac.com/game?key=a7220a92

And others saying that it was a high number of math problems like: 12x86, 7.65/1.3, 2.085-1.735, etc...

Also heard it was the numerical reasoning test like this:

http://www.shldirect.com/practice_tests.html

And it ended up being pretty similar (but harder) to this one. Seemed more like a business school type test than a trader aptitude test...

Good luck.

First time I got 27 (didn't quite realize the timer started right away), then took it a handful of times after that, and got between 40 and 47. Heard someone say they got 80.

I got 45 first time I tried it last week... I imagine I can get up to 55-60 in a few more tries but u would probably need 70 - 80 to pass (guess)

Little late to the party but to be fair nowadays the best resource to prepare for Optiver's numerical test is easily https://www.tradermath.org/dashboard/orange if there's anyone still interested in this.

If you are looking for the 80 in 8 test try: https://www.tradinginterview.com/courses/mental-arithmetic/quizzes/optiver-80-in-8-test/

They have some other resources for the Optiver interview as well
