If you look at the last two recessions:

2008: Dow lost 54% from highs over a year
2000: Dow lost 38% from highs over two years

They seem a reasonable guide for downside potential.

Does anyone actually use the dow as the benchmark for anything nowadays?

S&P 500 declines were basically in the same ball park.
