so what exactly are you purchasing when you purchase an NFT currency? my understanding is that the blockchains NFTs are secured on are based on eth, and that most payments are conducted via eth... aside from actually purchasing some nft's, how can one get exposed to this space?

NFTs made the Today show a couple of days ago. If you haven't seen the clip it's worth a watch, if only to see where the general public's understanding, and thoughts, are on the topic.

In the segment one of the interviewees compared it to owning the master recording to one of Michael Jackson's songs. If I understand correctly, owning the master of a song gives you the distribution rights. This enables you to profit by selling records, mp3s, or licensing the recording for advertising or other uses.

My understanding of art is that owning the master, or original, does not afford you similar money making opportunities. Except for lending/renting out the original for shows or viewings. The artist can sell the original for millions. The artist can also make limited, or unlimited, edition prints which they sign (and usually number) affording the artist additional money making opportunities from the original work they created.

Many artist's original works are worth millions, limited edition prints hand signed and numbered by that artist are frequently worth thousands. A plain print by any artist can be had for $20 (basically the cost of printing and shipping).

If you own an NFT can you sell limited edition prints, license it, or? Is there any other way to profit from owning it, besides finding a greater fool? Can Beeple now turn around and sell limited edition "signed prints" of the NFT he sold?

I bought a $199 top shots pack... 170k were waiting in a random queue in line and only 38k got a pack. I landed a rookie that's worth $1500 right now. Holding it for a few years. It's interesting serial numbers play a huge part in the price as well.

Nice one. I was in that queue but got randed around 140k so obviously didn't get one. I have 3 other packs, only opened one of them in order to qualify for the $199 pack one you got where you needed a moment to qualify.

I might open them at some point. Alternatively could probably resell the pack for 5x

Serial #3 is going for 35k, so #2 being his jersey number I see 50k-70k at this moment. Probably a lot more years from now

i'm already one step ahead of you. that's why i'm looking at punks with the smile attribute. they are as rare as a clown nose (2.2% or so), but the market is pricing them about the same

i want to make sure i'm getting good value relative to the market. i think i have a decent eye for it, but i'm not entirely sure.

and if the best strat is to fire a bunch of bids rather than looking for offers, that's not something i have any experience with (and gas is expensive)

It is MoonCats. I claimed two yesterday (Friday). Was a wild time.

CryptoCats were a similar thing that was found the day prior I think but there are only like 600 of them and are more valuable than MoonCats (well, probably, price discovery on them both is just happening now).

Planet money interview with beeple, interestingly, he's convinced most nft art is garbage and will eventually go to zero
