NFTs on a blockchain can be traded on any market, even if the original market no longer exists. Or p2p with no intermediary. Advantageous for many reasons.

And also disadvantageous for many reasons. Maybe I just can't see it gaining any traction because I think those kind of NFTs are completely pointless and ridiculous, but if enough people do value them it could work. It's a lot of data for distributed storage though, and keeping it decentralized will be costly for users, it just doesn't seem worth it.

A blockchain is just another word for distributed database. The reason Bitcoin's database is so valuable is because it's really, really hard to change. Why is it hard to change? Because adding entries to this database is linked to the real world. You need to expend actual energy to change Bitcoin's database. You can't fake this. Why are people expending energy to add to Bitcoin's database? Because they get a reward in the form of Bitcoin. Why does this reward even have $ value? Because people highly value an immutable, digital database which could function as money.

Given the above, how does that work with NBA NFTs? Could you walk me through the actual process. Who will run this NBA NFT database? Who adds entries to it and why? How does this security model work? Why is it worth sacrificing efficiency and not just let the NBA run it?

Agree:
- there are disadvantages
- there are many silly and frivolous use cases

I'm merely saying they are clearly superior to a conventional DB in the respects I mentioned. I also believe compelling use cases will emerge beyond art (I've found a couple already) but this is nascent.

Yes, and I agree with the positives you bring up. I think it is good to really question the need of a public blockchain for every single case, for the reasons CoolTimer articulated well. For some cases it could be worth it, and that is really cool. And even if it is not really worth it, it could still be a good speculative investment, but then at least you have a better grasp of how to handle that investment over time.

Just a small recent example. "MLB Champions" was the first fully licensed sports NFT. It was originally a form of fantasy MLB game where you used digital 3D bobble-head figures to set up teams and you could win new rare figures based on what happened in the actual MLB games that were played that day. You could chose to mint your figures as NFTs onto the Ethereum blockchain by paying with an in game currency.

Long story short, the game lost it's license before the 2020 season, game is dead, all the assets you owned in the game are gone, but the figures that were minted onto Ethereum live on and are traded as normal sports memorabilia. I bet those who have been selling rare 2018 Mike Trouts and Babe Ruths for 1-10ETH are pretty happy they spent a few cents to mint them as NFTs compared to just keeping them in a centralized database.

Interesting and relevant example.

How much do the NFTs sell for now?

It is a pretty illiquid market because of Ethereum Gas fees which makes it hard to buy the cheaper ones. There are a total of almost 250k NFTs from 2018 and 2019. Prices obviously vary wildly based on player and how rare they are. 90 Day volum is 379ETH and there were 6 sales in the last 24 hours which were:

2019 Franmil Reyes (x/90) 0.005ETH
2019 Mike Zunio (x/118) 0.004ETH
2018 David Wright (x/24) 0.575ETH
2018 Shohei Ohtani (x/282) 0.78ETH
2019 Adam Eaton (x/262) 0.005ETH

I have bought a few myself and think the historic value of being the first fully licensed sports NFT and probably one of the first 3D NFTs makes it an interesting project long term.

I have massive cryptopunk fomo and really wanna buy a floor one. Someone please talk me out of it.

To be honest I don't think twitter having verifying that you have a NFTs and being able to brag with it is a big deal. tiktok, insta or facebook would be a big deal though

Looks like prices just went up.

I think Twitter is the one you’d want to adopt this first. I could be wrong but I feel like it is the biggest platform for nfts right now.

grabbed myself a floor punk (9014) honestly it feels pretty great

fun fact: in regards to rarity of the attributes it is ~1300/10k but the market doesn't like black women so it is a floor punk.

NFT twitter is toxic. You just need a good discord community.

EVERYTHING is pumped. Toadz, toadz derivs, winter bears, hoots, gapes, blue chips, you name it and its pumping.

Saw a run on cryptofoxes this morning, a project I recommended around the same time as voxies. It was pretty much dead but the floor was .1 last I checked. Same guys who did foxes went on to do Pudgies, and now Mekaverse, so I think its come full circle from that.
