Merchant Account and Gateway/Processor question

I want to be able to put my clients on auto-debit and have found that I need a merchant account (looking at authorize.net) and a gateway/processor. Infusionsoft is the company I've been looking at but it's probably out of my budget. What exactly does the Gateway/Processor do? Is it something that I can do myself if I only have 10-15 clients getting billed once/month? Also, are there any alternatives to infusionsoft at a lower price point?
