I am starting an online store selling merchandise and I was wondering what do you prefer.. Google Checkout or Paypal when selling your products.

I use paypal when I charge people. Both are legit, I just think their services are very simple to use so I stuck with it.

In addition to Google checkout's fees being lower, you can process up to 10 times your AdWords expenditure in sales for free. Effectively this means that you're either processing for free, or getting free advertising.

We offer both. PayPal is slightly more popular than Google Checkout.

However, both are much less popular than credit card.

yes but some "older" people who aren't as familiar with online shopping feel it's "safer" or just more "normal" to directly use a credit card transaction and have to worry about talking to credit card if something happens then opening up and giving paypal/GCO their info, imo

Ultimately, this decision is up to your customers to decide. If they want Google, give them google. If they want PP, give them PP. Don't let the small discreptancy in costs lower your sales volume. In my experience, most people go with PP and don't even know about Google. My experience is 6 months old. Maybe things have changed.
