Know thyself, a great lazy man once said. Just like him I spent a lot of time studying philosophy and all I want to do is relax and enjoy a stress free life (and play lots of poker). Any ideas to help a duderino out?

I don't need a lot of money, just enough to cover my living expenses and I could probably make the rest up with poker winnings. But, just for the heck of it, I'm curious what are some well paying cake jobs?

Here's my list so far:

Librarian (could be awesome even though female dominated.)

Call center - seems casual just talking on the phone

That's all I got right now

Librarian requires college and is very difficult to get into.

Call centers are factory work for people who are slightly smarter than the average factory worker. They are usually quasi sweatshops where you will spend the entire day getting yelled at by strangers and then hounded by your boss. The latter will happen even if you are in the top 1% of performers.

What you're looking for is best handled with a good solid side hustle. Other than playing poker and chilling out what do you enjoy doing?

Some important questions:

1) Do you enjoy the company of random strangers? (If yes you might be able to get into sales... a career field that is strictly awesome if you have the right personality for it)

2) Do you enjoy solving puzzles? (if yes you might want to look into learning how to code well enough to do some freelancing)

3) Do you like the outdoors? (If yes you might enjoy certain blue collar jobs like landscaping... but make sure that you do these jobs as a direct contractor rather than working for someone else or the hourly will be awful.)

4) What do you enjoy about poker? Is it the game itself or is it the gambling?

Security officer, hotel attendant or generally any job that has hrs between 6pm and 6am will generally be easy.

I am in no way blasting any of those jobs for what it's worth, but based on your librarian comment you want to sit and stare off into the distance and general post 9-5 jobs include a substantial amount of that

Yes but then you have to live a lifestyle (night shift) that has major proven health issues and serious life issues.

How about mail carrier? Decent pay/benefits, exercise, conducive to walking around pondering life on earth. Also, didn't Prine deliver mail? Just don't get fired for being scared of bees.

A friend started delivering for UPS a couple years ago and loves it. People are always happy to see him, and it helps him stay in shape to boot.

Good suggestion. Other civil service jobs with minimal responsibility are probably pretty good too.

I guess depends on your definition of well paying. Maybe selling cars? I wasn't aware librarian jobs pay well, what is pay like for them? Maybe try driving lyft/uber?

I think air traffic control sounds like something you would like, you just sit there and talk to planes over the radio and it actually pays really well.

Being a lazy bum is nothing to be proud of, but at least you're honest about it.

Government jobs are tailor made for people like you.

Lol at posting air traffic controller here. That job is super stressful and requires significant focus for your entire 12+ hour shift.

gotcha, I served for 4 years and my job in the CG (operations specialist) was supposed to be very transferable to ATC. seems I underestimated how much mental energy it takes. what is the work schedule like for them though? working 12 hour shifts how many days a week?

Yeah but air traffic controller seems pretty easy for me. I'm really good at focusing. Like poker is easy on me. Also I wouldn't get bored. Don't they have strict requirements though? I'm deaf in which kept me from the military for one thing.

Librarians make about 50k which isn't bad in my opinion for what they do.

So are you just looking for jobs where you sit at a desk / computer? computer science, programming / most corporate jobs you will land out of college then

Hard jobs are those that do not require a lot of experience. Good jobs are those where you have a lot of specialized skills. To me, call center or fast food would be a hard job. Engineer would be an easy job. Ever notice on the car shows on tv they seem to have easy stress free. The reason is they have a lot of experience, a lot of capital (tools), deal with large amounts of money, and a lot of clients that are clueless about cars. Airplane mechanic might be one. All jobs designed for men are lazy jobs, investment advisor.

Although librarian might be a locked up job, you might want to consider starting a private library and coffee shop especially in towns that don't really have enough funds to pay for them.

Very strict requirements to get into air traffic control. Someone who self identifies as a "lazy bum" is probably pretty far down the list of people they're looking to hire.

Not much to add here, but I sometimes fantasize about working somewhere like Whole Foods. It really depends what you're into:

animals -> petfood store, local non-profit, etc.
food/drink -> bartender, barista, grocery store, etc.
health/nutrition -> personal trainer, nutrition coach, etc.
...

I'm sure you can muster the motivation to go through this thought exercise on your own and and come up with some more ideas...

Hah. Good one.

But seriously, given what you've described, something in government wouldn't be a bad way to go. If you're smart, you definitely want something where you have a specialized skill. You might think that being a waiter or a barista or whatever is an easy job, but they bust their asses when things get busy. The more you use your brain on the job, the more opportunity there is to chill out and only work hard when you really need to. Good luck to you.

Being deaf could actually help you a lot with getting a govt job. I'd go that way.

What about being a manager at a poker room or casino? I spend a ton of time there already. They seem to stand around all day looking serious and handling problems as they arise. Do you have to start as a dealer or do they ever hire poker players? Assuming they are competent and socially aware which I am.

The trick, as you imply, is to find something that doesn't feel like work.

Also, effort does not have a linear relationship with how emotionally ****ty a job is. Being bored sucks. An interesting study: http://science.sciencemag.org/content/345/6192/75.full

seems like anything unionized. Not that all union jobs are easy but if you want to ensure no overtime and difficulty being fired no matter how bad you are a union is for you. Iv heard stories from my bro who worked a summer in medical records. They got mad when he finished his pile too fast, saying it was supposed to take all week and he did it in a day and a half. Unfortunately for you (but good for society) with EMR that field is going away

I didn't know medical billing was unionized. Ill look into that. Sounds boring but pretty relaxed.

I'll second what someone else said about harder jobs being the lowest paying. Ive worked some tough physical jobs that pay crap but break your back. And people always think you're lazy because you don't have a white collar job, when you're working way harder than them.

I always found it weird when people equated "hard" with physical. My friends who waited tables were always saying how hard it was. Sure its tiring, but many jobs are tiring. Some white collar jobs are mentally tiring. If you run a department and are constantly needing to put out fires and wage little battles it is mentally exhausting. Id say thats harder than doing tree planting or something else completely physical. 1. in the sense that not many people can do it well whereas anyone can put their body through rigors makes it harder or at least rarer. 2. in the sense than the stress and mental drainingness of what I described always feels harder than physical tired to me. I go to the gym to be tired for fun. I know its different, but I just never understood how people viewed the definition of hard = physical.

Work as a mover for a few months and see if you still feel that way. Or get injured on the job and find out how the corporate muckety mucks treat you like a worthless animal, work comp conspires against you.

Although physical work is nice at times and good for the soul, the risk factor isn't worth it. Not to mention low pay and lack of status.

Being a mover has to be the worst, but out of curiosity do they get paid better than a landscaper or trash man?

About 11 an hour is my best guess. Trash men do pretty well I think
