I imagine exchanges will announce their plans for the fork before the merge, I'd probably just wait to see which will have it available right away and have the eth there. Otherwise, just leave it all in trezor.

So gas fluctuates between 20 and 40 Gwei right now. How much is that equal to in USD?

The website says it's like 70 cents.

But if I try to workout how much that is in USD

If 1 ETH is at 1600 USD
1 wei is 1ETH/10^18
1 Gwei is 10^9 wei

30Gwei is half a hundredth of a cent? That doesn't sound right.

Oh ok, so 21k gas is the minimum expenditure required to modify the blockchain.

So the cost of an empty transaction works out to 1USD. This makes more sense.

Can you help me work out the gas cost of storing a url to the blockchain? Say 20 characters long.

I think that the fee to be paid is the 20k SStore operation (+ the 21k tx cost), but I'm unsure how many bytes would be stored.

Agreed, although it will take some to determine if someone has found a security vulnerability in the new protocol, which they'd likely keep quiet until they've bled millions off investors.

That seems unlikely. They had multiple test nets that have merged successfully already. There was very little risk to the actual merge.

ETHW has been released on FTX and worth 23.1.

It's not the act of merging I'd be worried about. It's the new protocol itself.
