Re: Can Uber be stopped?

Good times with the latest Uber theft news:
Quote:
SAN FRANCISCO — Google accused rival Uber of plotting a devious "cover-up scheme" with a former Google engineer to steal crucial self-driving-car technology, a bombshell claim that turned up the heat in what has become Silicon Valley's most high-profile legal battle in years.
Quote:
Uber acquired Otto in August, but according to Google's lawyers, Otto was never meant to operate as a real business. Anthony Levandowski, the engineer who left Google and founded Otto, planned all along to go to Uber, Google alleged. In fact, Uber gave Levandowski $250 million in stock the day after he quit Google in January 2016, lawyers said in court. (An Uber representative later told reporters that it was a document from August and simply back-dated for time served.)
What are the odds of Google ending up owning a big chunk of Uber at this point?

A U.S. judge on Wednesday said he had not seen clear evidence that Uber Technologies Inc had conspired with an engineer on its self driving car program to steal trade secrets from Alphabet Inc's (GOOGL.O) Waymo, and that he was wrestling with whether to issue an injunction against the ride service.

At a hearing in San Francisco federal court, U.S. District Judge William Alsup said it was undisputed that the engineer, Anthony Levandowski, downloaded about 14,000 documents shortly before he stopped working for Waymo.

If it were proven that Levandowski and Uber conspired in taking Waymo's information, that could have dire consequences for Uber, say legal and ride-hailing industry experts.

Uber's $68 billion valuation is supported partly by investors' belief it will be a dominant player in the emerging business of self-driving cars.

However, Alsup expressed skepticism over whether Uber actually used any Waymo trade secrets.

"I've given you lots of discovery, and so far you don't have any smoking gun" showing that Uber knew Levandowski possessed any Waymo trade secrets, Alsup said.

Waymo attorney Charles Verhoeven said the company suspects such evidence exists. Levandowski declined to answer questions during a deposition, citing his constitutional rights against self incrimination.

5% chance? Uber will likely get a slap on the wrist. Reminds me of this.

I don't believe anything said about Uber's financials until they actually go public. At the rumored valuations, going public is the only way investor's will be able to exit. It is actually very odd that they haven't gone public yet.

I don't believe the market would support a $60 billion valuation for Uber. And they need a much higher than $60 billion valuation for the later stakeholders to get properly paid off.

Going public also greatly increases scrutiny and reporting, and given what looks like illegal, immoral and generally questionable activities, I'm not sure it would be in their interest.

That will start to be a problem as employees will start to see their stock options be worthless. That may be why the President quit.

I still hear radio ads recruiting drivers. Their driver attrition must be very high which means they aren't making money.

Uber has seasonality, in which Q1 is typically their lightest quarter for rides. So their losses are likely lower in Q1 since each ride is believed to be operating at a loss once you factor in discounts, rider and driver subsidies.

What's interesting is that I didn't get offered any discounts in Q1 but in the past few weeks I've been offered 30 rides at 20%, 15% and 20% off.

Oh and that number is excluding stock comp, so yeah...
