The damn shame is the fact it was legit one of the best exchange experiences I've had. I've been doing a lot of business on a handful of exchanges and I can say #1 without a doubt is Gemini. Btc-e excelled in deposits/withdrawals/customer service, but lacked a bit in volume.
This is now turning into an exchange review.
Gemini excels in that all trades always go off as planned. There's never any site outages or lag. Transfers and wires are free. Volume is good. USD is insured up to 250k. The downfall is fees are on the higher side. Unless your doing serious volume, your looking at .25%-.15% for any trade. Customer service is 24 hours I believe.
After BTC-e and Gemini it just starts to fall to **** where the response rate is ****ing weeks. Everything is fine on Gdax until occasionally you don't get the wire your suppose to get and the money sits in limbo. You contact support where the message always says "We are under a heavy load, it may be days until you hear from us". I went off on them last night stating "IF YOU ARE UNDER A ****ING HEAVY LOAD ALL THE ****ING TIME, IT'S NOT A HEAVY ****ING LOAD, THAT'S A NORMAL LOAD AND YOUR ****ING UNDER STAFFED. QUIT ****ING PENNY PINCHING AND HIRE SOME ****ING PEOPLE"
I almost got into the fact that they have millions to hand out to the flash crash "victims" but can't hire any staff, but that was just too much for me to do at the time. Also besides the fact of the ****ty support and occasional delayed wire, the big thing is site downtime. The thing goes down 20 times a day. BUT, you can trade fee free if you are a maker and they have massive volume so sometimes you just gotta deal with the **** in this industry.
Poloniex is pretty top notch. I just don't have much need for them with what I'm doing as they don't do USD deposits/withdrawals. Their customer service can still be very slow.
Kraken is like the cutoff of any exchange I would deal with, and after the recent BTC-e issue I think I'm going to do away with them as they aren't USD insured. They don't respond to support tickets, but there's a thread on bitcointalk.org that if you put your support ticket # into, the guy escalates it and it gets taken care of. Their trading engine sucks balls and lags to ****, but once you learn kind of how it works, you can get some good fills and that's the only reason why I've stuck with them so far. When you do volume with them, fees get pretty low too which is nice. Whenever I have a doubt if I need to get off Kraken, I look at a picture of the Ceo
