The fact that Maryland courts are involved suggests a possible link to online gambling. The US Attorney for Maryland has been active in going after online gambling companies, most notably in the ‘Blue Monday’ indictments of multiple sportsbooks in May 2011. In the wake of US law enforcement clamping down on traditional methods by which US-facing online gambling companies processed payments with their US customers, the anonymity associated with Bitcoin use was viewed as a possible workaround. There are several small Bitcoin-only online gambling operators as well as a few other gambling sites that offer Bitcoin as a payment option.
These these ****ers shut down SWC I will martyr myself. Mother****ers.

We've seen this story already, the US gov cuts off the legit operators, so the shady ones charging bigger vigs fill the void (plus maybe a US gov honeypot operator). The shady ones do shady stuff ldo, which the government can use as a reason to leverage a bigger case/attack, ect.

haha... from wiki

"On March 2, 2012, Leopold was indicted on multiple counts of misconduct in office for using his state-provided police security to investigate political opponents, to remove campaign signs, and to transport him to public places to engage in sexual liaisons with women."

Doesn't say anything about jail.

Thanks, this looks like an awesome resource and I hope to get through it today/tomorrow.

Anyone have any resources for a newbie about mining? Trying to get this all figured out. Thanks in advance.

ETA: just did a quick google search and found the Beginner's Guide in the Mining forum on bitcointalk

Is it normal to not be allowed to get on Coinbase's home page without updating my Java? I just tried going there in Firefox and this happens.

I don't mind installing Java, this just seems fishy, why does Coinbase even use Java?

(note: everyone should always update Java obviously, the only reason I haven't is cause I almost never use Firefox and didn't even realize it had Java set as a plugin)

There's no indication they went after them because of BTC versus specific regulations or company violations at this time is there?

btw I am still surprised the Mtgox thing has basically had no effect on price other than a small dip for less than a day. Some threads on bitcointalk are trying to say this is a great thing for Bitcoin, which is trying a bit too hard imo. That kind of talk REALLY reminds me of 2 friends I spoke to on the evening of Black Friday, and the day after, who tried to convince me what an awesome thing BF would be for online poker (their rationale being that it meant legal online poker would come along in 6 months to save everything or something.)

Not saying the DHS thing is anywhere near as bad as BF though! Just surprised at how nonplussed everyone is about it.

well the USA influence in the price of bitcoin is constantly declining anyways. From what I've seen China is becoming a much bigger driver of the price, and ofcourse there are countries such as Argentina where BTC is catching on due to currency problems (and Id suspect a lot of smaller countries with weaker currencies will go the same way at some point, if they arent already). So while its definitely not good the DHS did this, I dont see it as a huge deal long term

Wallet is a confusing term, so really all the coins are held in the blockchain like one big decentralized bank and the wallet is your key to your account(s) location and ability to spend in the blockchain?

Exactly. I've been saying for a while that the real value will come from the developing world and people without access to CCs and Paypal and whatnot. People in the US generally have a "Why wouldn't I just use my debit card for that" mentality.

Bitcoins themselves do not exist, even in digital form. There are only records of balances.

The reason bitcoin will never be legit is that now people are simply INVESTING in it, instead of using it for commerce. From here on out it will just be a big nightmare, as people will eventually rush to cash out. It could go up more or crash, but that is not a stable currency. It can never be stable, and it cannot be legit because it is a simple speculation game now, even if some people are using it for commerce.

You would never accept it for legit commerce since you would be at risk the moment you took it as payment (doesn't matter that some are taking it now).
