Would anyone with a good reputation like to short btc while letting me long them for a prearranged period of time?

It could work like this...

1. We make the bet for a period of time, say 30-90 days.

2. Price at time of bet is $X

3. If price is lower than $X when the bet ends I will pay you $X*however many coins we bet. If the price is higher than $X you will pay me $X*however many coins we bet.

i admire the balls you all have betting on btc with all this bull**** going down lately. i really like the idea of bitcoin, but am getting the feeling some bigwigs don't want it to succeed. its pretty awesome that when gox went down this last time, the price on btc-e didn't nosedive for once. perhaps the people are learning that just because gox is down, that doesn't mean they lose half their value. we may pull out of this tailspin yet. btc back up to 113 on gox and climbing. if i remember correctly, that was the price 10 or so days ago.

You're confusing 'balls' with outright stupidity, this has happened before - dot com boom, people with no knowledge of what they're doing throw money at something trying to get rich quick. The only difference is that the people here seem to be even more ignorant.

You need to get some actual arguments other than 'INVESTORS KNOW BITCOIN BAD' or 'THIS LIKE DOTCOM BOOM CURRENCY IS EXACT SAME AS STOCKS', 'WHEN NUMBERS GO UP NUMBERS ALWAYS GO DOWN' or 'YOU HAVE TO BE THE BIGGEST IDIOT BLAH BLAH BLAH'.

People like and appreciates Tom Collins and his bearish posts, he has actual arguments and points to make. You're just throwing around the same thing over and over. If everyone is SO dumb and you know EVERYTHING, do us all a favor and say something beyond telling everyone how dumb they are and just vaguely saying "this is like the dotcom boom this is like tulips you are all so dumb I am so smart I know more than anyone here".

I'd be fine if this was the same as the dot-com trend...

Increasing technology/efficiency with an overall upward trend? Yes, please.

What bugs me most about Bitcoin is the people like eh777 and all the terrible, terrible reporters and pundits who don't even understand what Bitcoin really is or how it works, but they can't just say "well this is the first cybercurrency I have ever heard of, know what, maybe I'll actually think about this for more than 5 minutes, and then form an opinion". No, they have an opinion right away *AND* it's insanely vehement.

I saw a tweet from some business reporter last night that said "How does Bitcoin even get made, solving math problems like Farmville or The Sims? #gimmeabreak" and it's like: Oh yeah, that's right, you know how you SOLVE MATH PROBLEMS IN FARMVILLE AND THE SIMS, great frigging point buddy. It's like, why does this guy think he actually is in any position to make some statement on it when he thinks it's like Farmville?

There's another reporter who wrote this laughable story when Instawallet shut down where she couldn't even get the name right, she called it Bitwallet or Instacoin or something before they fixed it a day later, and I saw that yesterday she reported that Mtgox was closed for 24 hours, even though she was linking to a story those name was "Mtgox closed for 12 hours" (or that was in the URL or something). Oh yeah here it is:

It's just amazing that all these people REALLY think they are super smart and know everything and yet they can't even get the basics right. If you don't even know the name of the company you're writing about, go ahead, write the story, but maybe just give it a neutral spin, ya big dumb dumb.

Yeah that's legit, it need 2 hours of actual trading below $50 on Gox for me to win. Downtime where the price is frozen would just be removed from consideration.

Ignorant and poorly educated people are everywhere. They may lay bumps on the road in front of Bitcoin protocol, but will not cause real harm. Until some groundbreaking computational advance is made resistance is futile.

I'll be honest... part of what makes bitcoins so interesting to me is that it's so obvious to see (on both sides) the gap between how much people actually know and the concreteness of their opinions about it.

As in, most people know almost nothing, but somehow use that to form a very detailed opinion that they are very unlikely to change.

I thought the religion forum was pretty epic, but this is like RGT and NVG had some raw dog anger sex and this thread is the offspring.

have you watched any news programs the last 10 years that weren't 90% one-sided? there aren't any reporters anymore. there are just people that say what they are told to say. to be fair, if you paid me a million a year to spout crap on tv, i would do it too.
