there's a risk of getting caught while trying to pick up the cash. sure, you can do all sorts of things to try to minimize it, but with BTC, it's trivial.

the tracing thing i only mentioned to point out that you can't simply have the guy wire the ransom money to your bank account.

No, but you can have them drop off $100,000 in unmarked bills somewhere. The pickup is of course the riskiest part and Bitcoins certainly would reduce that risk.

When Mt. Gox say:

Quote:
Q. Are there any other fees charged when trading in multi-currency?

A. No. However, please be advised that there is a 2.5% premium when a trade involves orders in different currencies. However, this is not a separate charge. It is already reflected in the price you see.
Is this not just a fee by another name? i.e. if I buy in JPY from a person selling for USD, Mt Gox will charge me an extra 2.5%, and if I'm selling they'll charge them an extra 2.5%. This would imply that it would be best to trade in the most popular currency (USD I assume).

anyone invested in any of the altcoins?
Think it´s time to create a new altcoin and gain the same advantages as the early adopters of bitcoin.
(that´s at least how some developers may have thought^^ just change the name of the coin and copy 99 % of the bitcoin source code...)

Matt Probability and Yoshi63 are making a wager on the price of bitcoins. Matt is putting up $1000 to Yoshi's $167. If for any 2+ hour period in the next 30 days (ending this time May 12th) bitcoins trade on Mt.Gox for less than $50, Yoshi win's the bet. If bitcoins do NOT fall below $50 for 2 consecutive hours at any point, Matt wins the bet. In the event Mt.Gox completely disappears and is no longer used as an active exchange, bitstamp wil be used.

This is correct. It is contingent on Yoshi escrowing but that is being held up on my side not his and will very likely not be an issue. Just wanted to mention it. GL!

You might want to stipulate that the exchange has to be open for the two hours.

Thats a good point. Yoshi, If Gox goes to $49 and shuts down for 2 hours that would not count, correct? It has to be two OPEN hours. If you can confirm that's ok that would be great. If you want to discuss it just give me a shout on Skype.

Does anyone have a good theory for why BTC-E and bitstamp are trading so much lower than Gox?

I have two open bets. Both are basically the same. it is generally agreed upon that I have the worst of it by everyone except me.

Cool. So I just need to get my dwolla funded.
