I’m not going to spell out why but some of the biggest shorts are probably people trying to play both sides...

a popular thing during the silver/gold bug days of yore was "PAPER GOLD".. how institutions were selling paper gold that they didn't actually have... prepare yourself for thousands of articles about how future contracts are worthless because they are priced in fiat and similar nonsense.

Yeah be ready for the FUD, it's all bull****, because the futures contracts are tied to like seven worldwide exchanges where you can settle for instant delivery of bitcoin

Wait how long has BitMex been running? What's the difference between BitMex and CME and CBOE? Why not just order future contracts from BitMex?

He did not lose 2.3m

his position size was 2.3m. It was likely he was somewhere between 50-100x, making his margin 46k or 92k.

those margin calls are real. They are broadcasted by bitmex and OKcoin for everyone to see. You can see them on the actual order books.

Youve been able to actually short bitcoin reliably ever since bitfinex has launched. Dont believe whatever hype youve heard on CNBC about the lack of ability to short.

Ive seen ppl whove had rolling $1m usd sized+ short hedges ad infinitum on bitfinex.

Okay guys, you all are probably about to think I'm completely and entirely stupid for this. I contemplated this and it doesn't really make any financial sense at all. Perhaps one of the stupidest things I've done with my money, but I did it. Okay, I just did. YOLO right? YOLO. One day I'm going to die and my money will be worth nothing to me. I just couldn't help myself from doing what I did. I bought some crypto kitties. They are so cute and adorable. I'm breeding cats as I type. I find it very amusing. I don't know why I find it so funny, but it just is. lol.

The exchange risk is huge with shorting bitcoin vs going long. If I want to go long btc, I buy a few coins at a time and transfer them back to a wallet I own, never risking more than a few % of my position on the exchange at any one time, and it's only for a short period when I'm buying. Compare this to shorting where I have to deposit all my $ for my position and leave on the exchange indefinitely. You can use margin to mitigate this risk somewhat, but then you run the risk of being liquidated in the short term. No institutional money that wants to short bitcoin is going to be willing to take a risk like trusting bitfinex with $50M especially if they don't believe in bitcoin, why would they believe in bitfinex? So no, true shorting has not really been available until recently.

Whatever floats your boat, we're not here to judge.

That is a great idea. It is difficult since they are virtual, but I have been considering options of transcendence. This will allow me to upload my consciousness to my computer and breed with the cats. This will be a great addition to the genepool since the genes I will add will be extremely rare.

I could hardly believe it. Insane money for a virtual good that doesn't really do anything.

Honestly, I'm already starting to regret participating in this stupid cat game lol.

I just took a weekend off from refreshing my Blockfolio app every hour and didn't check any prices at all over the weekend.

I recommend anyone who has no intention but to Hodl to do the same.

would not recommend the above. They are both kind of required for life - checking Blockfolio once or twice an hour however is not...

over a short time period like this, speculating on btc price when us futures open, counter party risk is low. perpetual swaps on bitmex are 8 hours that rollover and you can close at any time
