JupiterO, it looks like there's also an option to post a link to the google sheet that anybody with a link can edit? Would you prefer to just have the email and password?

Was super happy to learn about that neat thing of being able to embed real-time price updates into a google sheet - although now that the sheet's set up, there's a chance could wind up getting more distracted by my real-life portfolio, which is still in a bit of a mess So either one would be fine ...


Thanks to formula72 for doing that big summary sheet - with that, was able to set up the google sheet ... but without it, may not have bothered, and it was a neat chance to learn how to set up a spreadsheet with stock price info, so thanks!

And thanks to JupiterO for being so fast with setting up this neat contest - have a tendency to get very scattered with my attention, and this contest has given me a reason to pay closer attention to this Investing section of the forum, where have been able to pick up lots of great tips from everybody with more experience with trading.


Really enjoyed mrbaseball's post #23 in the 2018 Trading Thread - am sure everybody's had to face that same situation ... for sure have myself. So it was great to hear how your experience in dealing with those sort of tricky spots has evolved as you've gained experience.

Fixed the sheet with the gains of the short, so hopefully those look better now! A couple of those OTC stocks sometimes act funny every once in a while - like LTEA was fine yesterday, but today it's not and am not sure how to fix it so it starts working again?


Anyways, wish my real-life portfolio was doing as well as this contest one Guess there's lots of time left in the year for stuff to change by quite a bit - will have to also work on trying to be more patient this year, and let the market do it's thing

I believe LTEA (long island ice tea) changed its name and symbol to LBCC (long blockchain). Which probably makes it even a better short

CRH (CRH Medical on TSX), DOL (Dollarama on TSX) and PEY (Peyto Energy on TSX) are not shorts but longs

CRH, DOL and BBY (Blackberry) I think you are pulling US listed stocks but they are actually TSX listed

Us Canucks are a PITA

My shorts are TSLA and RIOT although I'm already regretting RIOT lol

Looks like google sheets is TSX-friendly! Was able to add a '.TO' to CRH.TO, PEY.TO, and DOL.TO, so hopefully those are the right companies now.

And then oh yes, put them in the wrong column for some reason So hopefully now they're okay? Dollarama's probably a great pick for your long list ... all their holiday ribbon was only $1 a roll, but with the amount Sam bought before the holidays, they should be doing amazing this quarter

Tried typing in a bunch of different endings, like QCC.TO, and QCC.CNSX, and wasn't able to get them to show. Do these US tickers look like they might be the same companies, in USD?

Awesome, thanks. Yup the TSX listed for the above three are correct. The US ones would are OK too as all of these are traded on OTC markets...I"m not exactly sure how that works but i checked the symbols to make sure they are the same thing.

I was going to take a position in Dollarama around $11 - did not and about 300K in lost profits. I think I invested that in XIU instead simply tracking the crappy TSX returns.

Was also going to try to add little pop-up notes to each of the top 10 stocks, so we could all click on them and find out a little bit more about why they may be doing so well? But seem to be having some technical difficulties - so that part may take a little extra time ...

There's so many investment products out there on the market - so this has been kind of a neat opportunity to get to learn a little more about some new stocks

Guess our picks for the year are all locked in - but may even switch out some of the picks in my real-life portfolio for some on the top 10 list?

Shorting the stuff I put in as my shorts in this thread would be a really bad idea. They tend to explode in value from time to time. Margin calls would be expected fairly frequently, and margin calls suck.

Two of my longs (ZIV and SVXY) are suitable for trading or for small positions only since they are highly volatile (SVXY would have lost a bit over 92% during the global financial crisis and ZIV would have "only" lost about 80%). A 20% drawdown in a day in SVXY is expected on a fairly frequent basis, which really sucks so your mileage will vary if you trade it.

Two of my other longs are inside jokes. YUM as "the most innovative company in the world" and TLT as some other inside joke that I cannot remember currently.

PUTW is a good long-term hold.

I believe several people have already picked this, but if you can't beat 'em, join 'em.

Like it for a bunch of reasons that I've outlined previously, but one other thing that I think will be significant is the cut in corporate taxes. If you have a bunch of found money, one logical way to use it is to increase your advertising spend. We'll see what happens.

@Brian - thanks for the warning about the big swongs with those volatility index thingies Those were some of the ones was eyeing for my portfolio It's super interesting to hear how they do when the market takes a turn too, because was wondering if maybe they might be good to have if there's ever another huge crash ... it sounds like they might be?

@Malachii - am always looking for fresh ideas for stocks so, will have to check TTD out, thanks! May be able to add a section to the sheet for everybody who's posted picks in the thread, who maybe didn't post a full 10, or who may have posted past the deadline - so then everybody will be able to follow their picks as well throughout the year? The more the merrier


PS. Sometimes when am at the mall, like when gift shopping during the holidays, it's easy to work up a hunger from walking up and down the aisles looking for just the right stuff - and then some of those Taco Bell creations can be so eye-catching! Am sometimes not able to resist the call of the Bell, with their one of a kind creations ... drool They do seem pretty innovative with how many calories they're able to pack into a $1.50 snack - usually don't have room for dinner any more, after eating one of their various creations of two meals rolled in one lol
