Great company, I actually interviewed there a year ago. I managed to snag some shares after hours at ~105 when I saw how great the report is. Could easily be a 10b+ company in a couple years

Yep, serves me right for selecting something that was either going to the moon or zero with no in between.

I would never short SSTI in real life.

Closing in on a 3 bagger/200% gain for the year. Amazing job guys.

Couldn't have imagined AMD would have a run like this given the slow down in crypto and certain names in the chip sector rolling over/stalling out. Still a heavily shorted name, some funds are taking a bath on this run and lucky I'm not one of them.

I had a good run by picking CDProjekt (Polish gaming company behind Witcher and GoG) which went almost x10 in 2 years and AMD (too little too late because I was too lazy to make account to trade international stocks beforehand but still benefited from the recent run). If I have strong feelings in the future I will post here (right now mainly invested in ETFs, some in AMD and some in company run by my friend from uni days).

It seemed obvious to me they are a good bet once I started getting regular email and benchmarks from our customers who went for Ryzens instead of Intel and after reading a lot of opinions going basically like: "I can upgrade CPU after all those years as there is finally something giving significant performance gain after years of Intel tick-tocking in place". There was a lot of buzz about Ryzen and I think there will be more once it starts hitting datacenters.

I don't think desktop is completely dead because of gaming and data centers/cloud is surely not dead. AMD is likely to obliterate Intel there in coming years. I also like their CEO, the lady has amazing credentials, speaks to the point without exaggerating or marketing nonsense. Silicon Valley could really use her as a poster child of a successful woman in tech who is there by merit alone and doing amazing job at turning things around for previously "dead" company.

TrustySam are you still around? I think if we do an update at the end of October this might get interesting. Anybody have a working updated spreadsheet link? The last couple times I clicked on them some things were not working.

All I know is that my gains for the year have halved in the past week, no fun.

I've been working to much. Haven't had time to keep track of the picks. Who's in the top now?

the spreadsheet's broken but jb514 is short all the coin-garbage from last year, so he's up by 70 or 80%.
backstabr's got a lot of that coin-crap too, so i think he's second.

I'm confused. What does GBTC @ $2547 entail? When I look up GBTC it's just some OTC stock that never went higher than ~$20 and is now sitting at $4...

It's a bitcoin tracker stock. They had a 90:1 split some months ago. So it was 28.5 at the post above or so adjusting for the split, so it's 85% return or so, same as bitcoin short.

Can someone update this before the new year? It would be nice to see if there's anything to sweat and have a chance to insult each other

I'm assuming Brains account has been closed and his bicycle is on ebay

Since I guess the spreadsheet is lost if everybody can just calculate their own return and if you are positive in the green post your % return. With the way the overall market sold off end of year it might be pretty easy to narrow it down.

I thought just a handful of symbols were broken that would need manual input

Hey, Happy New Years everybody! ✨

The end of year results have been updated on the spreadsheet, so hopefully most of it will show on the now: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets...ViY/edit#gid=0

Guess this wasn't the ideal year to be buying and holding too many things for months on end, with all the volatility there was on the markets this year ...
Comic from '2018 Year In Review: Investing.com Comic Edition': https://www.investing.com/analysis/j..._campaign=2163

But we all seem to have managed to find a couple of gems here and there. Here's the top portfolios of 2018 - one short, one long ... and one with a 50/50 mix of both that may not have had the highest return but it seemed to have more green than red so that was kind of interesting to see

Top Short

Top Long

Lots of Gainers

This was such a special opportunity to have the chance to get to see the wide variety of different approaches to investing that everyone had for the contest - thank you to all of you for making this such a great learning experience.

Wishing you all a great 2019!

Thanks for doing this Sam and welcome back, hopefully you'll have a great 2019. If I could only switch my chips in AMD & TTMI would've been right up there... Side note but whoever does the spreadsheet next year has to account for stock/cash acquisitions. TWX close price was $100.48 with where AT&T closed on deal day rather than the $98.77 final price on the feed you used. Not that it matters or makes a difference but I assume it will come up again this year. Congrats to jb, mvp, & BooLoo for a solid year of stock picking.

Thanks for the update sam. Yeah I think buyouts caused the sheet some problems. FINL is marked as a 160% loser when I think it was about a 30% winner. Not enough to put me in contention but a big difference.

Also lol at REMX, never seen it before but thought I would want a basket of commodities that didn't include oil. Somehow I thought I found the solution but it's some rare earth processing company. When I saw my "commodities" down 50% I was seriously disappointed. Whoops

Congrats JB. That's a consistent list of solid winners

I wonder what jb's return would be if you included borrow fees. Some of those shorts were 100+% borrow fees at the start of the year. DPW for example has a 63% borrow rate. I'm guessing still very positive but not 64% positive.

Did many do worse than David Einhorn? His Greenlight Capital hedge fund lost 34% in 2018.
