I started playing poker in a local pub back in May. I qualified for regional finals and managed to finish 18th out of 149, however I feel this was more by luck than judgement. I love this game and really want to do well.

When I started I was naive and played loose, I wanted to play every hand I could. I began to listen to some of the old guy's and managed to read some books. Unfortunately this has made me question everything I do and I have gotten worse as a result.
Any help please would be gratefully received.

Sometimes you have to get worse to get better. You have to realize you know less than you thought, and make mistakes in order to learn. 2p2 is a wonderful resource, I recommend reading voraciously here as a great starting point. The strategy forums.

I used to play insane volume before 2012, then quit when Black Friday hit. I went back to Poker when the pandemic started and basically got slapped in the proverbial face. I know how you feel. The more you know the more it feels like you don’t know.

Studying is a huge commitment. Find a way that of learning that works for you. Reading, listening to audiobooks, watching instructional videos on youtube, working through some simulation hands, podcasts (there are some great ones), and here at 2+2 people are so willing to help. I’ve gotten a lot of help here. But yeah you’re not alone, i know exactly how you feel.

There are a lot of poker schools and stables now.
Although entering school does not guarantee an increase in the level of play, thay can give you is a lot of high-quality information.
