Hmmm, I won't say that you are wrong in your case because I wasn't there. Maybe there was a glitch or something.
But I can say that what I described is correct. If you click "Receive" you should get a brand new, never used address. That's the way their wallet works.
Once that address receives bitcoin, the next time you click Receive it will give you another new, never used address.

You are right that you can generate new addresses with the alternate method you described. The only reason I'm sticking with this is because I want it to be as simple as possible for new people.
If you try it now, is the address given to you new? You can check by pasting it in to the search box on the front page of Blockchain.info
