A bitcoin wallet is a collection of bitcoin addresses. The wallet doesn't hold bitcoin - the addresses inside of it do. In order to have bitcoin in an address it had to have be sent there from another address.

Every amount of bitcoin has a public history of being sent from address to address - all the way back to when it was first mined.

So if you said that you had 1 bitcoin in your wallet it could mean 1 bitcoin in one address... 0.5 btc in two addresses... etc.

I'll use a hypothetical situation where you set up a brand new wallet, create a new address inside, and then I send you 1 bitcoin.

Now you want to send 0.25 bitcoin to four different people. Each of those transactions would be tied back to the original 1 bitcoin I sent you... and would be pretty easy to figure out.

If instead you had created 4 new addresses, received 0.25 btc from 4 different sources, and then sent 0.25 out to 4 friends... there would be no public tie between them. None of the 4 friends would know about the other - or be able to tell that you ever possessed more than 0.25 btc.

All bitcoin transactions are public... but it's not public which addresses are owned by the same person and grouped together in the same wallet - as long as they haven't transacted with eachother.

I guess that's a really long rambling way to say "it depends", lol.

I've tried to stay away from too much unnecessary bitcoin info in here but it does help to have a general idea of how it works. Let me know if that didn't answer your question.
Thanks for the detailed answer, I appreciate it. After I posted, I thought about it a little more, and my exact concern was if bitcoin addresses generated from a specific wallet could be proven to be correlated even without any history of transactions between those addresses. I was curious if it would be easy for a site like Circle or Coinbase to find evidence of gambling transactions if a poker/gambling site only used one wallet, but used unique addresses for receiving btc and sending btc to players who requested a payout.

I wasn't as direct with my question as I probably should have been, but it seems like the following quote answered my concern:

Quote:

I've been using bitcoin to play poker and bet sports somewhat sparingly for around 1-2 years now, and I haven't had any issues so far. I'm planning to increase my poker volume substantially in the near future, especially now that Bovada offers btc deposits and cashouts.

I'd say that I have a working understanding of bitcoin, but I don't really know how it actually works, lol. I think I'm going to actually take the time this weekend to read Satoshi's paper, and browse around bitcoin.org in the hopes that I'll finally achieve a real understanding of how this whole thing works. Thanks for taking the time to make informative posts, EndTheFed, they've been quite helpful.

I've used LocalBitcoin to cashout a few times, and I really liked it. You can easily find trustworthy traders who have 1000s of documented trades, verified documents and emails, which really helped assure me that I would have a safe, successful transaction.

LBC offers many payment methods for selling bitcoins. I personally sell bitcoin for deposits into my bank account. I use Bank of America, and I've found sellers who go into the branch and make cash deposits, as well as sellers who make instant online transfers into your account.

I would suggest visiting the site and browsing the available payment methods to see if there's anything that catches your eye.

I've also used Circle and Coinbase to sell bitcoins, but it usually takes 1-3 days to get my money. On LBC, I get my money almost instantly, which is really sweet.

Thanks. I did a quick google so I figured as much, but I didn't delve into it too deep. I just was worried about blocking there having some unintended effect with my service that I wasn't aware of as a noob so figured Id ask you and double check since I was here.

Okay for anyone curious about how the VFF are going I will be posting updates for the next 10 months or so. I took advantage of the Cinco de Mayo Deposit Promotions and played Blackjack all day yesterday and ran my account up to just under $65,000! I snapped a picture when I hit 25K and when I hit 50K. So I requested a VFF withdrawal for $62,400 +$1250 in fees (25 $50 fees 1 free) for a total of $63,650 26 more Max $2400 Cash outs added to the 14 I already have queued. So I will have VFFs pending all through this year and into next year. I will keep everyone posted as to any delays.

When you click "Receive" a smaller window will pop up with a new bitcoin address. Copy that and give it to Bovada.

You can confirm that it's a brand new address by going to the front page of Blockchain.info and pasting it in to the search box:

Then you'll see a page like this showing the transaction history of your address. If it's new it will look like this:

Hi, I clicked receive and I got a new address. But here's a big problem I have. I can copy this address from blockchain but Bovada won't let me paste the address. I have to manually enter the address and this worries me because my eyesight isn't great and there's many numbers and letters to type perfectly. What happens if I type something incorrectly?

Hmm, I'm not sure why it wouldn't let you paste. Did you check to make sure you had it copied... like pasting to notepad or something?

You're right, bitcoin addresses weren't really meant to be typed out by hand.

On the plus side though, bitcoin addresses follow a certain format. If you accidentally made a typo the overwhelming odds (like 1 in 4 billion) are that you would not create a valid address. A bitcoin wallet client won't let someone try to send to an invalid address.

So if you made a typo you'd probably just get an email from Bovada asking you to give them your address again.

The only danger comes from copy/pasting the wrong address. Double checking the first and last few characters is enough.

Lol. Why would you choose to pick the option that has had the most issues, and line them up for the next year?

People on here seem to be pretty helpless when it comes to bitcoin. Do a little reading ffs. It's like you guys fire off the simplest questions that could easily be figured out on your own in a few minutes. How can you have been around 2+2 for the last couple years and not learned how bitcoin works?

Yes, I pasted to a notepad so I could conveniently expand the text. Bovada won't let you paste the addresses. I've now tried twice with my second withdrawal

+1. Congrats on the score but doing this many VFFs seems insane on multiple levels. I worry about what my bank thinks about these foreign wires can't imagine 30 or whatever visa refunds..

If you wired this I'm sure you could get it all off within in close to 3 months. If you don't have the option my guess is Bovada will make it available to you if you ask...

Like Endthefed stated, IF somehow the address was incorrect, chances are it would generate an error, not get your BTC sent off hurling into cyberspace and secondly, since you should be copy n pasting, getting the address wrong is highly unlikely.

IF there ever is any dispute, then both parties could check the payout address to see if any transactions transpired to it. Each one is supposed to be a new address, so that would be the only transaction that would be there if there was one. It's either there or it's not, if it's there, Bovada did it right, if it's not, Bovada made some mistake and would be responsible.

All that considered, imo, that is too much to ask.

I'm part of that batch from March VFF's. I sent a few emails and have called a few times. One guy told me if it wasn't in my account by a certain date call back to get some kind of credit. Doesn't get me my money any faster but I called today and got a $50 credit.
