If you had to learn POKER again... If you had to learn POKER again...

Imagine you're brand new to poker again, you've just learned the hand rankings and how regular cash game tables work and play, what the button is, who posts the blind etc etc.

You're back at square one and fall in love with the game all over again... If you could, restart, theoretically. How would you learn? What steps would you take in order to learn as much as possible as quick as possible, from the ground up?

You've told yourself you're not going to play a single hand of poker until you've learned everything necessary to be a winning player. Where do you start?

Okay, I'll cut the BS. I'm a losing player, a rec who steps away and comes back to poker from time to time, you know, the obessive feeling and love for the game then for some reason you just stop, then... WSOP streams (before poker go), EPT's, Triton cash games, UK Goliath Streams are streaming, I'll watch and then fall right back in love with the game again, i'll then become obssessed and think this time would be different, that i'm actually a good player because I would of folded in the spot where someone on the stream just went bust, load up stars, deposit 50 bucks and i'll punt away online in a multitude of ways - trying basic bankroll management but just losing anyway, playing different types of poker depending on the feeling that day, nl cash, plo, mixed games, tourneys, zoom, hell even some spin and go's, but the truth is when it's all said and done the reason i'm a losing player (albeit barely playing any major ££$$'s) is i've neglected poker study; learning all the basic things properly that I should really know, pot odds, equity, any maths relevent to poker and now the modern GTO ways and plays.

So, the plan? Make an account (check) , post a thread on TwoPlusTwo (check) and see where it takes me. I want to learn, I'm willing to learn, I just don't really know where to start. I don't want to just start throwing the little money I have at courses and books just yet. I want to see if it's possible to get myself up to speed with as free a content as possible, before I take the plunge in the more expensive deeper pool of learning.

Maybe it will take me nowhere because i've not posted in the right place, or maybe some one will read this and think i'm looking for hand outs and that not willing to pay for coaching etc, but the truth is I just want to start my own poker journey back at square one, right this time, put in the time, effort and also keep tabs on how much I end up putting in to the space again to hopefully one day become a winning player and have proof of how I done it.

If you have any recommendations for ways to learn or ideas on how to attack this then that would be amazing and much appreciated, as this is my first post (known about twoplustwo for years and read a couple posts but never been serious about it) maybe you could even point me in the right direction of how to use the forum correctly and utilise it properly.

Anyway, that's big enough. If you've made it this far, thank you for your time. I really do appreciate it.

Thanks.

Hey

Hope you're well. Think there's quite few decent YT(Finding EQ or solveforwhy maybe) channels which will be able to help, or one of the foundation courses (From ground up or Galfonds new one).

I'm in the same boat really, hit me up on discord if you wanna chat - faz88

Thanks for the reply.

Yeah I enjoy Phils free content and I think that it's definitely on the cards to purchase that exact course further down the line if I can't find an alternative route, I just wanted to explore and see if there were any free routes to take first before having to purchase anything.

Will get you added at some point soon and chat.

Much appreciated!

hello

this isn't unlike how i've been thinking recently

i have been around the site since 2010 and only v v recently i have made the decision to take my game seriously rather than have an interest in poker news, being in the community, listening to content etc.

so my thoughts have been: i wish i had studied this then and similar lines of thinking. eg imagine where i could be now if i'd had been more productive with increasing poker knowledge in may 2016 (see cv for what i was doing @ this point in time) or had chosen to focus more on thinking about [these] things (for husng's/btn and oop play with only 25BB's and under) in 2013 or 2020 instead of what i was. (see pages and pages of word doc's for 2020 thoughts!)

that can't happen therefore i need to come up with the right thought process for where i am now with poker. and where i want to be!

to make the point: i think a good way to think may be, it would be v useful to think about advanced concepts/to continuously attempt to play and approach the game @ as high (or as deep) of a level as possible while SIMULTANEOUSLY working on the real basics. stuff competent players never think about because they are so far past this level.

unfortunately i am not

so my thought process is: i need to make as much progress with the advanced material (in whatever way/however that comes) as fast as possible while also hammering away @ concepts like pot odds, preflop strategies, fold equity numbers etc.

there's 1 extra point that applies to me. i'm sharing with you AND any1 else interestec and i want to get it down for my own record.

yes alternative 'work' or structured poker study in the years 2012 to 2023 would put me in a different place now. probably a better place when it comes to poker experience and playing skill.

but the pertinent issue is: i have decided to take the game seriously now is because i am capable of taking the game seriously now! if that makes sense. prior to summer 2024 i wanted to play poker to a v high level but didn't have the skills.
