I've never gone broke using a 20 buy in rule for cash games. I drop down if I get to 18 buy ins. Example: $1000 to play 50NL, but if I get to $900 then I drop to 25NL. It's extremely hard to go broke if you do this unless you have major leaks. If you're playing for a living then you need more, I'd at least have 100 buy ins for whatever stake you are playing.

MTTs I believe the rule is 100 buy ins, but I am mainly a cash player.

The bankroll you need is hugely dependent on your winrate in the games you are playing.

https://www.primedope.com/poker-variance-calculator/

This is a good calc to give you some rough ideas of what you might need. If you are willing to move up/down regularly than you can definitely get away with less but that comes with it's own mental game struggles since if you run bad over small samples every time you play bigger you may tread water breaking even for a long time. 100 buyins for cash games for your main game is a fine general rule for a pro. If playing PLO you likely will want more.

For MTT how much you'll need is greatly dependent on your ROI and your avg field size. If playing small 100ish person fields mostly than you prob can get away with 100 buyins. If playing a bunch of big 500-1k+ person fields even with a high ROI you'd want a lot more. MTT variance is very rough if playing big avg field size events.
