... because I have seen with my own eyes, it's easier for people to fall for this than you think until you see it happen to people you know irl. The games are engineered to take advantage of how the human mind works, and I have seen intelligent, rational people whom I know to have a history of solid money management spend cash on facebook games.
The demographics that aren't into first person shooters and don't need a PS3 or a 360 to get out their jollies with video games, don't stand a chance... you introduce them to these games and they find one they like (and there's so many to choose from), and they will, at a minimum, spend a few hours a week playing them, and attempt to get all their facebook friends to start playing them too... because invariably, a facebook game gives you great ingame advantages and bonuses if a certain amount of your friends all play it too, compared to if they don't. It's this forced word of mouth and creation of in-game grinding, as others have mentioned, that builds a player base, gets it hooked, and entices it to spend money because it's such a small amount at a time and you're made to feel like an in-game master if you drop a few bucks on it. They sell facebook credits and zynga gift cards in major stores, lol.
