Sadly, Chip Reese passed away today.

In the light of this sad news, I thought it would be a nice gesture if the people who have had the pleasure of meeting Chip, could contribute a little to his remembrance by writing about some of the undoubtedly funny or interesting stories surrounding this great poker legend.

I can't contribute myself as I have never had the pleasure of meeting Chip, but I am sure some of you out there have (paging Johnny Hughes) and hopefully will share some interesting memories with the rest of us.

RIP Chip Reese

This is something many of you may not have seen. Chip talks about how he got started as a pro. It's from the TV coverage of the 1989 WSOP.

You'll have to fast-foward to 1:55 to get to the short interview with Chip.

This thread has potential. Maybe some of the reds will chime in with a couple of stories. Speaking of the reds, has Ray Zee posted lately? Can't remember seeing anything by him in quite a long time.

Hey Everyone,

Although I never met Chip Reese personally, my father has known him for the past couple years. Chip was part of a group negotiating with the Hotel/Casino my father runs in Vegas about having the PPT and other events there if they ever came to fruition. After just meeting the guy a couple of time my father grew really fond of Chip and related a few of his stories to me.

One of the better stories was about Chip's years playing poker with his frat brothers at Dartmouth. Chip had such a natural edge on the game that he would take massive sums off these guys and despite being in ridiculous debt to him they would never learn. As a result, and knowing how much it would hurt some of these guys financially if he ever asked them to pay up, Chip would hugely overpay them for doing mundane tasks. A good example being that if Chip were hungry he would pay one of them $200 in credit to go get him a sandwich at the local deli. I thought that these stories related that although Chip surely took a ton of cash off of people over the years, he did it with at least some level of empathy.

There are many other good stories, but I will let someone else chime in.

I would also like to say that Chip asked numerous times (through my father) if I wanted to go to his house and hang out, play poker, and get some lessons from him. I really wish I had a chance to take him up on his offer I just hadn't gotten around to it. It is really somewhat depressing.

Anyway, I know there are a lot of great Chip stories out there, lets hear some!

If it were just audio I would have guessed that this was from this year, the way he's talking about the young computer wizzes who aren't afraid to put their money in.

I liked the story he told on the old "circuit" radio show about how proud he was of his son pitching with a hurt hand or arm or whatever it was. You could hear the pride in his voice. He seemed so much more human to me than guys like Hellmuth who constantly talk about how great they are...

fwiw those interviews the circuit did from the wsop in 06 were great... the Ivey one is really good too.

Chip Reese had something like 250k or 500k worth of chips in a bag. He put this bag on top of his car while getting into it one day and accidently drove around Vegas with the bag on top of his car. When he arrived at his destination, he realized his mistake. The bag was still there.

dunno where i heard this story, it may actually have been in that circuit interview. Note that none of this is first hand and i've never actually met chip.

Chip was playing in the big game, and the game ran for a while. He ended up playing something like 3 days straight. Finally his girlfriend came to pick him up from the bellagio. When he got outside, he felt refreshed by the fresh air, and decided to take his gf out for dinner and a movie.

RIP.

x-post from BBV:

I played with him once at a Stud/8 WSOP event. He and this other guy were talking about different people that used to play poker back in the day in old Vegas:

Chip: Yeah Harry was funny, you know he used to be an arms dealer right?

Old guy: What? I knew him pretty well and can't believe that.

Chip: Yeah he was a really big arms dealer back in the 70s.

Another funny story he told:

Chip: Yeah the worst was I was stuck about 900k one day in the 80s and had to quit the game to go to my son's soccer game.

Old guy: Well did they win the game?

Chip: I didnt even watch it I was too busy being pissed about being down 900k.

yeah that story about driving around with the money on top of his car is incredible. he had been playing heads up lowball with archie karas (that guy that went on the heater of all heaters at the craps table) and when he busted him, chip lent him some money so that he could continue. when he met him to get paid back he somehow left the money sitting on the top of his car. lolololol.

it seems like i always find out one of my poker hero's was a complete donk, so much so that i quite thinking too highly of all the famous pros.
chip however kept the hope alive that there are guys who have can beat the game for a long period of time and stay on top. weird that i was just saying this yesterday to a friend...anyhow RIP

The real story was he had been playing in California in Gabe Kaplan's home game and was playing a bunch of wealthy businessmen and would play for sometimes over a day if the right people got stuck. He lost 200k and told the guy's it was a fun time and would be back in 2-3 days to play again. They knew his reputation but had never played with most of them before and they agreed. A few days later he had the $ in a suitcase and was on his way to the airport running late when he realized he left the $ at his house. He decided to race back to get it and still try to catch his flight. When he got home and looked ontop of his roof of his car he saw the briefcase wth 200k sitting there still. From the book Gambling Wizards ( great book with great stories from 8 different pro gamblers including Doyle and Chip )

I'll share my favorite Chip Reese story. I don't know where it comes from, some book, probably A. Alvarez, The Biggest Game in Town.
Chip moved into a new house that had a massive water leak. The first month's bill was like $2000. He paid it. The next month's bill was like $2000. He paid it. He didn't really know what things cost or what money was worth. Then they discovered the leak. Gamblers and leaks. I don't know if my numbers are right.

When Chip would get knocked out of the World Series of Poker in the earlier days, he would become one of the announcers. He was very smooth. Show business skills. Totally confident. Well dressed. Boyish looking. A class act. When the Series was small, the press dealings were very random. Chip Reese, Phil Hellmuth, and Amarillo Slim would be announcers and take telephone calls from reporters and do interviews near the final table.
