I used to like the guy...A lot...I thought he was entertaining and also pretty good poker player...That was 10 years ago when I started taking interest in poker...You know, Ivey's, Brunson's, Esfandiari's and Phil on youtube on HSP...
Time went by....I understood/read more about poker, realized he wasn't as good as he wanted us to believe he was...I still respected him, though...Because as he once said, during his famous emotional outburst, "poker is his life"...

Was looking forward watching him at PSPC...I understand first day, blind structure, could be late...I get it....Second day though... C'mon...Should have been there from start...I was actually disgusted..He seems to be doing this constantly now....
Now, my question is...Is Phil Hellmuth now nothing else than just a Z-list celebrity, talking and writing about "positivity", who happens to play poker every now and then ??

Hellmuth is good against bad players. That's really all he is. And as to his personality, a lot of poker players are like that. They think they are greatest thing in world. It kinda seems last year or so game has passed Phil by.

I remember Goose.core! saying on Joey's pod a little while back that PH's proclivity to late reg/blind off actually might be a good strategy for him, given that he is a much bigger dog when deeper. As to whether he is intentionally trying to reduce negative edge or shows up late for some other reason, that is unknown (at least to me). It seems conceivable that he doesn't think about it explicitly as him being a fish/-EV (as a means of protecting his ego), and has some rationalization in his own mind as to why he shows up late that is fundamentally based on some level of recognition that he is a dog when deeper.

He just thirsts of attention and arriving late generates him more attention. Especially on day 2 just guarentees himself that heads will turn and cameras will point.

I think its much more to do with this. Prob one of the reasons he so rarely plays cash. He's just not wired to play deep and has prob realized he gets in alot of nasty spots that he cant work through when he does.

At least he understands his leak and adjusts by just avoiding it.

Hellmuth is one of the GOATs of tournament poker. He's also a huge narcissist.

He buys in late partially for the attention. He loves to big time everyone. And partially because he DGAF about burning the money. He has endless trunks of it afterall.

Massive ego investment in his poker rep and image, making him highly combustible when it's threatened or undercut. Not an act. Obviously a lot of sound tournament strategy but his blind spots in cash play are hard to believe that they can co-exist with that level of tournament success.
