Pretty decent summary of how NASCAR attendance and TV audience numbers dropped over the last several years. https://www.forbes.com/sites/davecal.../#5e3d26cd1df5

NASCAR also has a pretty undesirable demographic TV audience with something like only 25% of viewers in the 18-49 age group. I think only golf is worse among major sports in that regards. And old people watching golf are rich, old people watching NASCAR aren't.

MLB faces somewhat comparable challenges, with the added problem of losing latinos in the 18-49 age group to soccer. That's one of the reasons why they would like to add a team in Mexico.

None of that means that the sport is dying or not a huge money machine anymore. Just a trend you'd like to reverse if possible.

Wait... source on these? I can't find anything that would either confirm or refute either claim.

From three sources:

Rio sold to unknown buyer.
WSOP moving to convention space at Bally's/Paris for next two years until Caesars convention space is finished.
Caesars trying to either merge with Station or buy Red Rock separately.

i just worked a 4 day show at this convention space concluding today

if true i could not see how they could remotely meet the demand as the entire hall is really just a main ballroom not even as big as pavillion with some small rooms on the sides...its literally just a good sized room surrounded by only two hallways with small auxilary meeting rooms...one floor

plus it was the coldest space ive ever worked in over five years...literally outside temperature indoors.. 50s and 60s

So that NASCAR stat about being the #1 spectator sport was based on math from their peak in the early 2000s. They had 30 some odd races and said we average 120k people per event and the NFL averages 60k, so we're twice as big as the NFL! I think only one or two NASCAR races pull more than 100k fans these days. (Daytona and uhh?)

Granted NASCAR attendance has fallen off a cliff in recent years.

MLB sold nearly 70 million tickets this year, albeit down from 72 million the year before. Most of the decrease in ticket sales are due to four teams which were not competitive or simply pissed off their fanbase (Miami)

If the Rio had been sold already, we would know about it. Otherwise the SEC would be very very upset. To put it nicely.

True, but an agreement to sell doesn't mean the deal has actually closed, and its not uncommon to have a quiet period of non-disclosure between the time of "agreeing to a deal" and the actual closing of the deal, the time between the two being filled with further due diligence, contingencies, etc.

These "sources" may just be hearing about an "agreement in principle", which can be miles away from the actual closing of the sale.

I heard for years that Caesars wanted to sell the WSOP and Rio as a package. According to an old timer floor man at GVR, Steve Wynn wanted just the WSOP for a long time prior to the Encore being built. If he had been successful in buying it, Wynn was going to include an entire second floor at the Encore casino specifically for WSOP, Wynn Classic, and other poker events.

Now Caesars is okay separating the two entities, which probably has more to do with Caesars' own financial situation. It'll be interesting to see how this all shakes out.

So I guess we can agree that nothing has happened yet that requires Caesars to file a form 8-K?

The last thing Wynn Resorts ever needed was 100,000+ poker players descending upon its luxury properties. What other deals that fell through was that old timer privy to? Maybe Steve Wynn wanted to host a Sturgis-esque biker rally at Encore? A hot dog eating contest? A toughman competition? A Duck Dynasty themed Cirque du Soleil show?

Encore Boston is putting their poker room on the second floor, in what appears to be a model of what would have happened if Wynn had bought the WSOP. It's a money maker, which Wynn likes, and by putting it on a separate floor, it keeps the dregs of society away from the rest of the casino.
