Nothing to see here, move on.
All true, but with Caesars indeed building a brand new Convention Center in the space behind Harrah's, Flamingo, Linq, I could see them wanting to show it off by moving WSOP there. And frankly, it would probably be a whole lot nicer than the Rio Convention Center.

I just hope they factor into the design 4,000 men all trying to use the bathroom at the same time!

What could go wrong ?

"When the subterranean lot is built, Caesars plans to address a chronic flooding problem by widening a drainage channel that cuts through the area. During heavy rain, flooding has frequently submerged vehicles parked in the old Imperial Palace parking garage now used by guests at The Linq Hotel."

That's 800 of the proposed 1100 parking spots....

My first thought. But if you keep saying that every summer, one year you might be right and can brag about it..

Next year will be the 50th WSOP.

CET emerged from bankruptcy about a year and a half ago, shedding ~$10B in debt, I don’t think solvency is a near-term issue in the least.

Rather than simply speculating whether or not the WSOP is going to move, I'd be curious if it does is that a good thing or a bad thing. I've only been to the series twice and they were two short stints. I could see both the pluses and the minus to being at the RIO but I'm coming at it from a very limited sample size.

Change is always a good thing until it happens. And then the complainers come out of the woodwork. It sounds like this year's series was smoother than most.
A new venue in the heart of the strip offers up some serious logistical challenges but also some tremendous benefits.

2020 seems like the logical year to move. If it's going to happen all the pieces are already in place. I remember when the WSOP first moved over to the RIO they had to wait a few years to get some of the spaces because they were booked that far in advance.

I'm not sure if that was really the reason or if in 2005-2006 the WSOP was still growing and didn't need all the space. 2005 and 2006 only had 45 Events, compared to 78 Events this past year.

However, the 2006 Main Event remains the largest ever but only because PokerStars, FullTilt, PartyPoker, etc. sent more than 25% of the field through direct qualifiers, and the sites could buyin the players directly (so it was a use it or lose it 10K proposition for qualifiers).

Also remember the Pavillion room being used for the "Poker Lifestyle Convention"? And virtually all the poker action, including cash games, taking place in the Amazon room.

But yeah it was pretty funny seeing a random Dentists Association Meeting in a smaller room across from Pavillion in '05/'06 lol.

WSOP is denying it but, of course, a move still might happen.

Seems like it would be a huge positive to move the WSOP to the strip.

For Caesars? That’s the only question that matters here.

Good article. Thanks for posting. I think the cons outweigh the pros. It's more convenient if you stay on the strip but for an event that lasts six-weeks, it would be a logistical nightmare.

Even if Caesars sells the Rio Hotel and Convention Center, it's not like WSOP couldn't rent the Rio Convention Center in June-July from the new owner, in fact that could be part of any sales contract.

In fact it would probably be desirable for a new owner since there probably aren't many large scale conventions looking to come to the Rio in June-July time frame.

Even if they find someone to buy the Rio, using the convention space there might still be more profitable than using their own new space.

Caesars Palace has twice the amount of convention space as the Rio. Hosting the WSOP at the latter location is not a question of available space but simply a business decision.

My impression of Vital Vegas is that he is, for obvious reasons, much more accurate about rumors concerning off-strip properties. He is less accurate about Strip casinos outside of restaurants and shows.

I think he means during the later stages of the tournament when people are in the money. When they are less likely to be concerned about missing another day at work.

But I do think moving it away from the RIO would have a negative impact for the RIO that needs to be considered. How much does the WSOP add to revenue to the casino? This would be lost if they moved it to the convention center. Also, would the convention center be geared up for a cage for example?

Yeah, the new owner would love it. But, a huge part of the value of the WSOP is getting thousands of people with money into your doors which could lead to gambling, buying over-priced meals & filling otherwise empty hotel rooms.
