I'm not sure if that was really the reason or if in 2005-2006 the WSOP was still growing and didn't need all the space. 2005 and 2006 only had 45 Events, compared to 78 Events this past year.
However, the 2006 Main Event remains the largest ever but only because PokerStars, FullTilt, PartyPoker, etc. sent more than 25% of the field through direct qualifiers, and the sites could buyin the players directly (so it was a use it or lose it 10K proposition for qualifiers).
Also remember the Pavillion room being used for the "Poker Lifestyle Convention"? And virtually all the poker action, including cash games, taking place in the Amazon room.
But yeah it was pretty funny seeing a random Dentists Association Meeting in a smaller room across from Pavillion in '05/'06 lol.
