Ivey played 44 events! 44!!!

I hope people will stop saying Hellmuth plays more events than everyone else. He is clearly not the pro who plays the most.

Trickett used his run good at the right time. No cash in 13 events... and then the one drop happened.

Anyone know why Ben Lamb played so few events? You would think that he would think that he would play as many as possible after winning player of the year.

well that also happens in smaller buy-ins too
I think it's such a huge figure it just would throw off all the stats is the reason why it's left out, be interesting to see anyways if you get real bored

I think 2011 was the first year that the WSOP kept public stats of all events entered. So you could do it for last year, but not before that.

Although you couldnt use the same list of players and still have the case selection be exogenous of the results, since I imagine a lot of players were drafted in 2012 because they had great results in 2011 (e.g. Ben Lamb).

ROI for "top" players is the same from the Steven Levitt paper:

Quote:
Those players identified a priori as being highly skilled achieved an average return on investment of over 30 percent, compared to a -15 percent for all other players.
I think this paper used 2010 data (?).

As if a lot of these people are backed for or pieced out in other WSOP events?

Yeah this (old) paper is worth a skim if you're interested in small sample size look with the data done carefully.

In lighterhearted posting - my get rich quick scheme:

1) Change name to "David Baker"
2) Enter poker tournaments

It seems to me that it makes a lot more sense for Ivey to play in 44 events than for George Lind to play in 48. Ivey has so much riding on bracelet bets that it makes sense for him to just enter every event, even if it means making hyper-aggressive plays (because he's multitabling) that would be clearly -EV if only the actual the prize pool were considered. But I can't imagine playing in 48 events without sacrificing significant equity in a lot of them.

Hellmuth has always had one of the best ROI %, as evidenced by Sharkscope and other databases. It would have been interesting to see how the top 100 WSOP players over the last two years did this year, as picked by the WSOP for the option to buy into this year's WSOP National Championship.

Vanessa Selbt is a beast. Invested less than 100k and got over 600% ROI...it's just amazing.
Investment lesson 101: Do not invest 72k in the stock market for an average return of 12% annually when you can play poker and have a 600% ROI in less than 2 months. Conclusion: learn how to play tournaments and stop calling it donkaments just because you can't compete in today's poker world.

This data shows that the era of online players is also coming to an end. While a few of old live players have been able to catch on, most of them like DN, Allen Cunningham and many others have not been able to adjust their game to the new generation of players. I would call this generation 3.0, the wiz kids with strong educational background who have a scientific approach to the game. Online players are no match to this new generation.

21mil in rake...ouch.

This confirms what i've been saying for a decade. w/ 30% roi NO-ONE can make a living playing live tournament poker w/o a bankroll so huge using it to play poker would be borderline ******ed. AND YOU DONT HAVE 30% ROI!! this is the top 88 in the world...yours is much, MUCH, lower.

Just to play the ME until you cash youll have to spend almost that much on food, lodging and travel. only the Rio wins and they cant even hire competent dealers or provide decent food and parking. LIVE tournament poker is a joke. just buy a lottery ticket and spend the rest of the day doing something worthwhile.
